Blizzard has posted a preview of the pre-expansion Demon Invasions, which are the subject of a Q&A tomorrow. Demon Invasions will not be available at the start of the pre-patch; they will be coming mid-August (no later than August 17th).
We have a guide to the invasions and videos of each zone, which are found
here
.
Edit: The PTR Build has updated and the build now shows as Release.
Each invasion is a group scenario with multiple stages:
Stage 1: Defend an Invasion Point, like Kharanos in
Dun Morogh
or the Crossroads in Northern Barrens.
Stage 2: Defeat the Demon Commander as well as two lieutenants.
Stage 3: Repel the Legion forces around the zone. You can open up your map to see where the enemies are. Progress is granted by killing mobs and saving friendly wounded NPCs.
Stage 4: Defeat a boss NPC at the Invasion Point. These bosses are quite challenging, with strong attacks like
Flame Fissure
from volcanoes or
Shadow Gale
.
Nethershard
drop as part of the invasion, and are used to buy the following items:
Felstone
: 3
Nethershard
Potion of Fel Protection

Battle-Mender's Dressing

There’s a World of Warcraft: Legion pre-expansion patch coming soon, and that means a great number of changes and improvements will be finding their way into the game. We’ve recently outlined several reasons to get ready for it all
here
and
here
. Today, we’d like to take a closer look at the some of the content that will be coming to Azeroth in the weeks after the pre-expansion patch. Incursions and Diversions Around the second or third week of August (no later than August 17 globally), after you’ve had time to play around with the patch and get a feel for the changes, some angry invaders are going to start dropping out of the skies over Azeroth.
You’ll be able to identify where the invasions are currently happening by looking at your world map. As quickly as you can, head out to the zone that’s under attack and lend your aid to the defense of Azeroth. Each demon invasion takes place in four stages, and each stage ends with a reward of
Nethershard
s—and sometimes a chest. That means it’s always a good time to rush out and fight the Legion.A week after the invasions begin, the Legion’s assault will begin to intensify. Then, a week after that, the demonic onslaught will intensify even more, increasing your chances to complete the event-only achievements
Stand Against the Legion
(for completing one invasion) and
Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions
(for completing invasions in all six locations). Loot Intensifies When you participate in demon invasions and receive
Nethershard
s, you’ll want to hold on to them. Collect enough, and you can spend them on all sorts of transmogrification armor (there will be four ensembles available: cloth, leather, mail, and plate), new pieces for your neck, fingers, back, and trinket slots, as well as the event-only
Felbat Pup
battle pet, among and other useful items.
Speaking of weapons, you’ll always want to open the chests you obtain from demon invasions, as they have a chance to drop one of
16 event-only weapons
, such as
Niskaran Morning Star
or
Staff of the Inquisiton
. At item level 700, these weapons might be more than a transmogrification collection item for you—they might be the perfect thing to pick up and swing at the face of the nearest demon! Remember to Share One more item that we’d like to tell you about is a new toy that will be available during the Demon Invasions: the
Pocket Fel Spreader
. It’s not actually a good idea to leave it in your pocket, but it is a great idea to figure out how to obtain one of these tainted trifles—because this may be your only chance. For Azeroth!

So freaking hype for the pre-patch shenanigans! Woot!

Wait, so demonic invasions won't be coming the same day as the pre-patch? Bummer :(

After doing about 50 invasions on the ptr I can say they are a ton of fun! The elites can just about one shot me, the bosses do one shot me. It's really neat to have something that requires a big group in the world again. I advise other players to form groups so they go smoother for everyone.
The Legion is back with new weapons and technology. They've found Aiur and conquered the Protoss and assimilated their warping technology into their arsenal. Legion buildings and bases warp in from no where.
And take it from me, when the invasions start up, do NOT fly up to that Super Star Destroyer you see in the sky. It
does
hurt!

So the Demon Invasions won't begin with the start of the pre-patch? Why? What content will the pre-patch actually bring to start with then? Just the class/UI changes and wardrobe? Will we just be sitting around for two weeks?

My understanding is that they want to get class, ui and game changes stable before unlocking the new content, as its significant changes. A bummer tho, with nothing to do for weeks.

The prepatch portion of the invasion, from what I've seen, reminds me of the prepatch event for the opening of Ahn'Qiraj, with the big Anubis-looking dudes who would just stop the **** out of lowbies in areas like Gadgetzan, me included. Those were fun times, I hope it's like that again with the demons invading those kinds of areas.

Anyone know what the minimum level is for the pre-expansion events. I have several alts in the 90sas well as a few in the 50s.

You'll do what you do now. Gearing up? Leveling alts? Hunting for Pets or Mounts? Getting Achievements? Clearing out quests and bank slots? etc. etc.

I kinda understand waiting a little while before the invasions hit for us to figure out the new changes if these mobs are as tough as they say.

I've seen level 10's doing the Azshara one on the ptr. In fact a level 10 disc priest was actual the best tank for the boss it couldn't break their shield.

I meant purely in terms of pre-patch content.
Will there be any new content to do before the Demon Invasions? What about the city doomsayer/dreadlord event? Does that come before or after?

With that cryptic little date appearing again ("no later than August 17th") it looks like we'll be getting the invasion events at the same time Demon Hunters become available.
I've been getting alts to the final stage of the legendary ring quest, the 33 tomes from HFC. I'm going to be doing a few runs through that to get a feel for the way the specs play now and see what I want to take through Legion first. So I'll have plenty to keep me occupied until the invasion I think. And maybe get some more legendary rings to play with on alts.

Probably longer than two weeks. If the pre-patch comes this upcoming Tuesday and they are putting "no later than Aug 17th" as the time frame, we are easily looking at a month of wardrobe and class changes.
I am still very excited about this, but I'm not counting on having anything really fun to do until August 17th.

I kinda disagree. If nothing else we will get to see how our classes play. Don't know about you but I am somewhat skeptical about Legion so I am on the fence until I play the new classes. I want to see how SV hunter feels, how prot warrior tanks, if monk is broken ...
So many questions that will decide if I buy legion or wait for discount.

Nope, no content to speak of before the invasions. Just getting used to your new rotation, playing around with wardrobe and getting used to improved profession screens.
Oh and of course leveling up your new Gnome Hunter :)

From what I've heard, only level 100 players will be phased into these invasions.

So can you REPEAT an invasion? Like do all four stages in one area... go to the next and repeat all four stages. RINSE/REPEAT and go back to the first one. Heck even stick around maybe.
Any sort of TIMER like a daily reset or something?
