Transmog is a very popular topic, and after many questions on our Legion UI blog and roundup of Blizzard tweets on transmog, we're taking a closer look at how the system works on the Alpha.
Wardrobe UI
Below is a video from
TradeChat
showing the Wardrobe UI in action.
At the top of the Wardrobe UI, there is a progress bar showing how many appearances for a particular slot you have collected.
The new options shirts, tabards, and weapon illusions are included.
The UI for displaying items is very user-friendly, with image thumbnails of all the various models.
You can only transmog items intended for your armor type, or cosmetic armor.
Mousing over an image thumbnail brings up the name of the transmog item, as well as a list of items with the same appearance. Hit tab to cycle through them.
There are options to preview your character wearing the selected gear, and to create and save outfits.
Shoulders, helms, and capes can be hidden and these preferences are saved in your outfits.
You must currently visit an Ethereal Transmogrifier to change your appearance.
How Appearances Are Unlocked
The following tweet from WarcraftDevs has spurred a lot of discussion:
This is intended to level the playing field among armor types so Plate wearers do not have a distinct advantage in unlocking four times as much transmog as cloth wearers. However, there is some confusion because the Alpha system currently goes by what is equippable, not the above system. As the Alpha is very early on in development, the transmog system does not seem to be fully implemented yet.
Hinalover
did some transmog testing on the Legion Alpha and
wrote up his results
. Here are the conclusions.
a) Only Items that drop from mobs that are equipable are added to the transmog.
b) Quest items are only added if they are equipable. If an quest gives a Cloth Chest Piece, mail legs, or a 2-hand Mace; a mage will only unlock the chest piece. however a Paladin will unlock all 3 items.
c) If a quest reward is spec specific on rewards (leather gear for monks) it will only unlock the items for that spec.
....1) Only caveat are weapons. If a weapon reward is given, it will unlock all weapons that class can use even if it is not for that spec (Windwalker monk reward is polearm or sword; but Mistweaver reward is 1-hand mace or staff; it will unlock all 4)
Some other Wardrobe acquisition information includes:
Tier sets are still class-specific. If you want to look like another class, you must farm up an off-set item (if there is one) without any class restrictions to unlock the appearance. (
source
)
Challenge Mode sets are account-wide but limited to characters of the same class (similar to class-specific mounts). (
source
).
Appearances from vendor items only appear when they are soulbound and cannot be sold back. (
source
)
BoEs must be equipped in order to be added to the wardrobe (
source
).
At BlizzCon, it was announced that all eligible rewards from quests you'd previously completed would automatically be added to your Wardrobe collection. As many older quests are not spec-specific, plate wearers are at an advantage when it comes to unlocking rewards currently--perhaps this will be fixed in a future alpha patch.
Legion questing works in a similar fashion--when you choose a reward, the appearances of all other eligible rewards are added to the Wardrobe.
Transmog Resources
If you are interested in working on your transmog collection before Legion, Wowhead has a lot of tools highlighting our 3D modelviewer and item filters.
The
Dressing Room Tool
lets you create an appearance from scratch--armor, weapon, and character customization. If you visit the
Legion Version
of the tool, you can try out all the new Legion items, including Artifacts, on your character. This version of the tool supports Demon Hunters and their unique appearance options as well--tattoos, blindfolds, horns, and skin tone.
The
Transmog Hub Page
highlights the following:
Transmog guides and filters for each class.
How to use the
transmog set database
which groups together all matching items and lets you browse image galleries of the items on any race.
Image search results
and the Same Model As tab.

good no more shoulders. I was hoping blizz would make it so you could see what armor would look like if you did not have a tabard on. I always hate having to take my tabards off to see what chest pieces look like.

So what about the Challenge Mode gold weapons from WoD? If I buy all of them on my Death Knight, will it be unlocked for all classes even though I can't equip most of the weapons?

I'm seriously so crazy excited for this one aspect...my bank/bags/voidstorage are all stuffed full and I've even deleted/DEd some things here and there. Still so many others I'd like to pick up. Waiting for pre-patch is gonna be killer. :(

I hope that when Blizzard retroactively rewards completed quests, they'll just give us all the rewards regardless of class.
As my rogue has Loremaster, I'd like it if all low-level cloth, plate, and chainmail get added to my transmog library, not just the leather - not to mention staves, greatswords, etc.

Man, what a slap in the face for roleplayers.
To clarify: On live servers you can equip a leather item for example on a shaman and transmog it into a different leather item.

If the "fix" means only the class specific items would be unlocked that would suck tremendously for quests that can't be acquired anymore, because I doubt most people had the foresight to complete all the classic quests for each faction on four different classes.

Quote from a post I made on a previous news article:
By way of example,
Last Rites
gave 6 weapon reward options - visible to all who did the quest - so (the way I see it) 6 looks will be unlocked & their transmog. use will be 'locked' to your Class proficiency, whereas
Darkness Falls
will only have offered rewards that were usable by your Class so you will only unlock what you were offered, despite there being a total of eight looks available.
My Main is an Arms Warrior; which of the 14 available looks', from the above two Quests, will be unlocked to him in Legion?

Both yes and no, to be honest. As a roleplayer I find myself mostly transmogging weapons like this, not armour. After all, if I already have, say, a
Tribal Vest
, then I'd just equip it for my roleplay sessions and replace it with my normal gear for other activities.
When I transmog weapons like this, it is typically due to having, say, a nice sword that I'd like a second, identical variant of for RP while I use daggers for actual combat. Then I'd just buy and transmog the cheapest green I can find.

Why are you guys advertising a feature that doesn't work?
The dressing room is still useless.

You'd still need to get the same item on every character you want to use the look on (if they aren't leather wearers), which doesn't help at all with the bag clutter situation the transmog wardrobe should help alleviate.

What I want to know: What about quests that got removed with the Cataclsym revamp?
More specifically: What about Rhok'delar/Lok'delar and Benediction/Anathema? Will they be considered for the collection too?

I have a bad feeling about this mog system, blizzard never ever does what it should be. they start with a great idea and end up disappointing people.
Ideal mog system is to be like the toys/heirlooms system or mounts etc.
But who knows in the end probably it will be something cool, until know i like the way it goes.

Maybe that will still be possible, they just did not consider the scenario where someone would wear armor other than what they are intended. I would guess they would keep that functionality in, but I have no data to be sure.

"All rewards from quests"
- Would love it if ALL quest rewards from that quest, completed by
ANY class/spec
, were unlocked.
"Plate wearers unlock plate, mail wearers unlock mail."
- Bring back "
if soulbound
"; period.

For 40 levels, 4 classes wear a different armor type.
So all that
leveling mail
isn't unlocked on my
warrior
?

exemple:: i had loads of itens , gear weapons entire sets..on my bags , bank and void storage....in future i still need to keep all those itens or they are added to the wardrobe... there always been a problem with space for itens i like to farm sets weapons.... do i have to keep then phisically or they really are added like the pet , mount toys and heirlooms system... similar to diablo s trasmog system...

Is wardrobe character specific or account wide?

Apparently not, from what I've seen of the new system. That said, alpha is alpha - lots of time to tinker and change.

Ah, I see what you mean now. And yes, I fully agree with what you say, I personally want a system like the old one, but where all your soulbound items are stored.
Also, when it comes to bag clutter, I fear roleplayers will always have it worse than others, simply due to how RP outfits work - that, and the fact that Blizzard almost never design systems like these with roleplay functionality in mind.

I have a question about the Transmogs since I noticed this on a few of my items.
Some of the stuff I have is labeled as "cosmetic", like
Warm Red Woolen Socks
. I was wondering how that would be handled in the new UI. Will they just be added into the group they belong to?

Class restriction on armor type is already a thing, how is it a slap in the face for RPers?
You make do with what you can equip, especially as a clothie (who in my opinion are already limited in the good looks department).
While I agree 100% that all looks should be available to everyone, it wouldn't look good for a priest to wear blackrock armor nor would it fit lore.
If the world was ideal, I'd be able to slap together cloth items as well as leather to match my vision, but allowing us to wear whatever we want kind of breaks the illusion of RP. We'd see rogues in plate and hunters wearing
Warbear Woolies
and
Sandrene's Invisible Vest
, just because.
