What I do on my priest is just target the add with the most health, then cast Mind Sear on that. The only other option is to get the Glyph of Holy Nova, but even then it breaks Shadowform so not overly useful.
Mind Sear and level 90 talents. Unfortunately, unless you are fighting a lot of mobs at once or a few that will all die in a cast or two, Mind Sear is not worth it. Its damage vs mana, let alone damage vs almost every other AoE is terrible. In most cases you are better off casting Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain on all the mobs, throwing in a Mind Blast if you have time before refreshing. The DoTs do significantly more damage than Mind Sear.
And yes, Mind Sear can be self-cast. It no longer has the hole in the middle.
For maximum damage, simply dot up everything with SW:P, use your talented AoE at level 90 and then chose a single target to burn down at a time - kills stuff faster than mind sear, and by killing one at a time you also reduce the incoming damage.
I have had no trouble soloing wull packs of goats for the goat steak quest as shadow (funnily enough I've had more trouble with a comparetively geared warrior and better geared hunter).
Just keep up PW:S on yourself and use MB for Shadow Orbs so you can DP for health as well.
Well as he lacks the experience of higher levels lets assume he doesn't have the talented AoE at 90.
How I deal with AOE is similar to most of the posters above -
Open with SW:P and spread it to all the targets
Vampiric Touch, Mind Blast, and then Mind Seer the highest health guy
Repeat until you're low on health, or they are all dead.
If you are low on health, your Mind Blasts should have given you 3 orbs for Devouring Plague... so find a higher health mob and solo him to get your health back.
His question was related to targetless aoe - the one you would use to flush stealth mobs. Glyph of Holy Nova is sadly the only option - but not only does it break shadowform, but eats a valuable glyph space... Which is terribly sad for this fun little spammable spell. Why is it gone oh why...
PvP wasn't mentioned, "small packs in almost every zone" was.
Also, I realize that the L90 talent is probably not available, but at some point our OP will reach 90, and having been told to throw that in there ("... at level 90") could be a help at that time.
At level 90, here's what I do, depending on the mobs.
If the mobs will die quickly due to low health or lots of AoE from other players:
on one mob ONLY if you have all three Orbs
If the mobs have enough health that 1-3 casts of Mind Sear or equivalent time with other player's AoE won't kill them:
every mob, prioritizing VT because it does more damage and returns mana to you.
Hit one mob with
to gain a Shadow Orb, then give that mob
. If there is no boss, cast DP with whatever amounts of Orbs you have currently. With all three Orbs, boss or no boss, LEAD with DP, then hit Halo, VT, and SW:P. Don't even bother with Mind Sear unless you are waiting for some other spell to come off cool down.
I realize that some people pick a different level 90 talent other than Halo, and in some fights, those talents might be more DPS, but I've found that overall, Halo is better, used more often, and changing talents for one fight here and there is best left for players trying to squeeze every last DPS out (meaning super elite guilds doing the hardest hardcore raids).
