In my battle group all I ever do is AV when I want honor points. Alliance win about 90% of the fights that I happen to be in. Same zerg routine, quick and easy. AV has become the LFR of BG's.
Those AV's of old are long gone. The field of Strife and Lord summoning are probably an unknown quantity to a majority of the players today.

1. Because we don't need them, what would you consider adding? We have 2 good Tanking runes, The best Dps rune, and PvP runes.
IMO we have too many runes that are simply never used.

2. Are you kidding? Zerging has been very successful, which is why people keep doing it. Admittedly I don't do AV as much as I used to but its successful about 50% of the time. (as you'd expect when no tactics are employed)
I agree it was much more fun before, but..what can you do really? People have always been oblivious to good advice in battlegrounds, even more so now they are more about XP and leveling than gearing up and having fun.
**Edit** Plus people no longer want to spend half a day in AV :(

Pretty much ends the thread. The only thing that could be added is that (horde side anyhow) the only time zerging doesn't work is when you get mouth breathers who break your team up by trying to defend crap that doesn't need defending. Your team has enough tanks and enough heals to off tank the Van's little buddies and enough dps to burn Van down. Sadly though, you get too many people in there who spend have the bg wasting time defending and then the other half nerd raging about the lack of defense.
