I'm interesting to learn how to make my own add for wow.....
In my web search i found this software AddOn Studio for World of Warcraft (addonstudio.codeplex.com). I thing that is realy nice...
My question is : How secure is to use a Software like this ? Is anyone try it? If yes can you plz let a feedback?
ty all :)
P.S. : If anyone has try somthing else plz let me know :)
If the author worked in the same spirit as Visual Studio (Microsoft's dev. environment), it's safe. And it looks damn sweet!
Don't use Addon Studio. It has not been updated since early Wrath, and is horribly outdated. Also, it teaches you nothing, generates badly inflated and unnecessary code, and is used by nobody serious about writing addons.
The most popular Windows programs are fancy text editors like NotePad++ and UltraEdit, but Windows' own Text Editor will work fine.
If you want to learn how to write addons, get the book World of Warcraft Programming, Second Edition, by James Whitehead II and Rick Roe. It has a website, wowprogramming.com, that has errata and up to date APIs, examples, and other references.
I personally use that program to develop the GUI on my add-ons, but I find coding the add-on easier to do in Notepad++. It's certainly possible to use AddOn Studio for coding, but I find the syntax highlighting in N++ very helpful.
I almost forgot that there's people who actually
Visual Studio. It makes me shudder at the thought.
OP: Grab Notepad++. It's a wonderful text editor. If you want to make drawing and handling windows easier, you can use libraries like
If you're just starting out, you'll need to learn
. After that you can peruse the
UI section of Wowpedia
for API references, how-tos and other help about WoW addon scripting. After that, the best introduction to begin writing is taking small, simplistic addons and modifying them so you can get the hang out how things work.
AddOn Studio might not be as developped as Visual Studio (which I thought you'd need to install AddoOn Studio), but I like the way it's designed, the IntelliSense and.. and... It's too bad it's not up-to-date anymore but such dev. software require a lot of time to develop and to keep up-to-date. I believe it was built on a totally volunteer basis and perhaps that's why it's not updated anymore. I believe NotePad++ doesn't have* IntelliSense?
To be honest, the only IDE that really even comes close to Visual Studio is Eclipse and it has some serious ... complexity quirks. C# and VS are some of the things Microsoft has actually done right.
They've got you using made-up words.
, but I don't know how. I don't use it. Regardless it's a hugely popular feature that every respectable editor has to some extent.
pelf: The keyword there is IDE. ;)
Drunk TRA says N++ or bust.
N++'s autocompletion is ... substandard, really. It's also been really quirky every time I've gotten it set up. I always have it off.
Probably good plugins for it floating around.
People do love
. If I were to upgrade from the simplistic NP++, it'd definitely be to that and not VS. (Then again I'd consider NP++ -> VS a downgrade. I really dislike it.)
Well, VS isn't really in the "upgrade path" for N++
. Not any more than a full fabrication lab is an upgrade for a handsaw.
Thx all for your the replies...
