Weapon Swap; one works, one doesn't

Good day all. With the Hunter losing the ranged slot and sometimes getting face to face with folks.. I needed a one button to swap the bow for something a bit more DPS dealing and back to bow. Looked around and wrote one that works, and one that doesn't. Looking for why the one that doesn't ... doesn't. :)
Here's what I came up with:
/equipslot 16 Mindsear Shanker
/equipslot 16 Flintlocke's Chuckshooter
/equipslot 17 Knife of the Venomous Asp
This works just fine, but I'm a bit mystified as to why when I get the Gun loaded in, does the last line NOT produce an error?
Now here's the weird one ( this was written for a Warlock, so instead of using slot 17 ( no double weilding ), I used a pair of shirts) ...
/equipslot 16 Dreamrending Dagger ; 4 Blue Linen Shirt
/equipslot 16 Skystrider Katana of the Boar; 4 Red Linen Shirt
What I expected to happen is that IF he was wielding a Dagger, that the Katana and the Red shirt would be loaded. If he was wielding the Sword, then the Dagger and the Blue shirt would be loaded. Instead, the shirts get swapped. E.g. If he's wielding the Dagger, he'd get the Katana just fine, but then be wearing the Blue shirt.
Why does this not work the way I thought it would work.

Wouldn't hunters be better off leaving their guns/bows equipped at all times? I know the dead zone is gone and although I lack a lot of knowledge about hunters, I'm pretty sure you'll do more DPS with your shots than you will with your auto attacks. Correct me if I'm wrong.
On topic, I would use equipment sets as well. I have them for cooking, fishing, and PvP, and at the end of Cata I was using an AoE set and a Single-Target Raid set. For a macro that decides between two equipment sets based on which one you're wearing when you activate the macro, the one Shxdxws posted is perfect.

You absolutely
don't
want to be equipping melee weapons at any time as a hunter. That's the entire point of being able to shoot point blank. You seriously need to re-evaluate your skill as a hunter if you're considering this.
I mean, this is worse than me trying to DPS with Wrath and Moonfire on my
Feral
druid.
Don't do it. Ever.

My thanks to all that have replied. For those that have questioned the use and skill at close range, I simply say that as a low level toon, the bow can easily be outmatched by even a sword. Sometimes the enemy still manages to get to you past your traps, your pets focus, etc. and you are face to face. Yes you can disengage if it hasn't timed out. It would be nice to have a quick option to get to what ever you've got that hits harder when you need it.

With how quickly focus recovers, a few arcane shots/explosive shots (spec dependant ofc) would easily out damage a melee white hit

An auto-shot should even outDPS a melee white hit. Perhaps the melee weapon is heavier so the up-front damage seems higher, but the ranged weapon may be faster at the same time.
I'm still doubting your rationalization aszy. Sorry to throw your request for help into question, but I'm no stranger to hunters, and I'm definitely no stranger to theorycrafting. I would put gold on it that your assumption that a melee hit is helping you out is absolutely incorrect.
In fact, if it were it would constitute a valid bug report, because this is precisely contrary to the design of the class and should never occur. If the developers were made aware of a situation where melee outdid ranged for hunters, they would promptly change (fix) it. (Even still they did not rework the mechanics in favor of such a bug happening, so I'm still contesting that you're correct.)
