5.0.4 patch, brutal graphic issues

I think there had to be a significant way in the way the graphics were running. My laptop usually doesn't get overheated at all with wow, but can with Skyrim and some other games. It started to overheat last night though, after the patch. I also noticed what I thought were real improvements in the quality of the graphics, but I wasn't sure if the patch had just reset my graphics to a higher quality, or if it was new. I noticed the biggest difference on the character select screen.

Good evening everyone.
As many others did today I downloaded the 5.0.4 patch, went through necesarry configuration and was all ready and set to play. Now the thing is, my computer is pretty bad and old, but I was able to run WoW on it on little bit subpar settings just fine. Today I logged in, disabled all addons just in case and entered the world. I was greeted by screen full of blurred colours and random images and icons - you know all those flashy pink, green and blue colors just mashed together. This went on an all my characters. I am no computer genius, but I know that this may be pretty bad.
So, do you think that the graphic could go up so much from previous patch? Or any other ideas why this could be happening? I will be really happy and grateful for any idea and if you don't have any, words of condolences and sympathy are appreciated too :D Thank you very much.
My old computer did that with Cataclysm. It was the video card. All in all though, it'd be better to just get a newer computer.

So easy to spend other peoples money.
I have WoW running on a 2006 Dell XPS, with 2gb DDR2 RAM, and a low end gForce 210 video card. You honestly would have to try to find a lower end system still in working order.
Anyway, I am running just fine with the new patch. I run my graphics in a custom configuration, with most settings at Fair, shadows on Low, and Particle Density and View Distance on Good. I am getting 30-40 fps in Org, and at least 20+ in raids.
So, while I can't say you don't have an issue with your PC, I would look for other problems first. Patches are glitchy. Give it a day or two, check your settings...maybe try running another game. If it runs other games, its not your PC, there is nothing in this patch that drastically increased the system requirements.

It's called "giving advice". If he's having that kind of graphics issue then he hasn't changed his card in a while if ever and more than likely has a computer that is barely able to handle Cata. Probably looking at having to upgrade way more than just the video card due to the age of the machine. You can nickel and dime yourself to death replacing just about everything in a computer or just bite the bullet and get a new one.

The new computer minimums have been available for quite some time now ( at least 6 weeks) .
There are a lot of changes to the min spec ( anything below windows 2000 , i think -may be xp , is no longer suported for example and you now need a twin core processor) and there has been a rise in the graphics card needed as well .
have a look on Bliz website ( cant remember if i have seen them on wowhead or not ) .
Seems like they have introduced the changes now which is a good thing , gives people who cant run the game 4 weeks to update before MoP

I have WoW running on a 2005 Dell Optiplex, with 2GB DDR2 RAM, a Pentium D (The original dual core processor), and an ATi RAEDON X1300. ... Running the game just fine, however. I also use a custom configuration, but most settings are at Low, liquid at fair, and view distance at good. I sit around 25~30 FPS in Org, and usually get between 15~20 in 10-mans.

I went in an reset my graphics to the recommended settings on both my laptop (which is integrated Intel graphics) and my desktop (which has an nVidia 550) and noticed marked improvments in FPS on both.

Well Tuesday, i logged in and everyone was invisible. Make sure you have updated video card drivers. I don't know if thats what fixed my issue, but everything is ok for me now.

Could have something to do with the “reconfiguring of the game install” after the patch downloaded? I didn’t have any problems but did notice that loading into the game was much quicker than pre-patch. Maybe something went haywire and a reinstall or repair before trying anything that would cost $$.

my dreanai's face seems to be collapsing when i zoom in and out (mostly in the dressing room but sometimes ingame too).
And flying high in northrend and dreanor had some texture glitches.
iam sure it will fix itself.
I do wonder where the repair function in the wow foldes has been put though, i cant see it where it was before.

Telling someone they need to replace their PC, (a several hundred dollar or more piece of equipment) because they have a graphics glitch on patch day, is bad advice.
If you took your car to a mechanic because it was not running well, would you want him to look for the problem, or just suggest you go buy a new car, without looking for the cause of the problem?
WoW is designed as a very lightweight game, abel to be run on older machines with limited GPU's. You may not be able to run it on Ultra settings, but you can play just the same. Also, patch days, especially major patch days, ar always glitchy. I would never suggest taking any drastic steps until after the game has stablized.

If you take you car to a garage and tell him its old as dirt, and it cant get about 15MPH while flooring it uphill, then yes he will tell you to fix/replace something.
And that is exactly what is happening here. If you know you computer is old, and know the graphics requirements have been increased, then you should be expected to understand you need to upgrade your system.
Money doesn't grow on trees. but you computer isnt goint to get better by wishing it will. It will get better by making improvements to it.
So take your bad advise elsewhere, telling someone to upgrade thier old system that can handle your everyday games is the best advice one could get.
If you computer is 6 years old (ancient by computer standards) dont expect games to run on them properly, especially when they are beeing upgraded. And dont be an idiot about it insulting people who are giving actual good advice such as replacing the really old parts.

I've noticed that I've had some slight freezeups and flashes since they've upped the graphics. My computer is about 7 years old and ran WoW much smoother than my 4 year old laptop did. I did order a new computer to play D3 (old one couldn't run it) so I know WoW will run much better on that machine than my ol' reliable.
(btw if you're considering on buying a new computer, don't order from ibuypower.com. I've had nothing but problems with them and the machine I ordered from them in June)

Thanks for this post, this is what I was wondering. I logged in and lagged like crazy and had no idea that they upgraded graphics. I guess this is where reading the patch notes comes in.

I run on a dinosaur system with integrated graphics (Intel 975 IIRC) and it had no real problem until this patch. I started getting nasty crashes and even BSODs, even with settings at minimum. I found (accidentally) that changing the Graphics API to DirectX 9 instead of 11 solved the problem. Not as pretty, but it doesn't blow up now.

My computer can run everything maxed out with little trouble before, but I was a bit shocked to have my frame rate drop significantly when I fly through or play in certain zones. It is a little frustrating when graphically things don't look drastically different, but hogs more resources. I do understand that they have to attempt to spruce things up and keep somewhere close with other mmo's coming out, and I can only assume the resource hogging I'm seeing has to do the challenges of a game engine that's going on a decade old. As far as what do do with the performance of the game other people have mentioned, but the impact that updating graphics card drivers can have is huge. I would also be mindful of any programs running in the background on your computer, checking the active processes in the task manager you can kill some of them and free up huge amounts of memory. Finally, and this is going to sound stupid, but popping the side off your computer case and going nuts with a can of air might help. I only say this because I've had a video card get caked with so much dust that it would overheat super easy and tank performance. It might be possible that no amount of tinkering is going to get you up and running, but it would just seem unlikely that if WoW was running well before that the changes were large enough to make it not run really at all.
