Hi all, Long time lurker, first post, so bear with me?
I've been a protection paladin ever since the talent trees changed and I had to pick only one tree to work through. Prot seemed the most useful at the time, and frankly I love it.
However, I took my time getting to 85 and I'm stuck at the moment, because I'm working my way through honor/conquest points via a daily battleground, and I'd like to be a better help to my team. A few quick points, so that people can give me more specific advice:
I'm not going to respec.
I play solo 99% of the time; that's probably not going to change either.
I don't raid. (see point 2).
I don't mind progressing slowly. I love this game, and I love this character.
And finally, what I hope to be a link to Braend on Galakrond:Braend
So, while I can flag carry pretty well and I can hold a node until some DPS-ers get there pretty well, I'd like to be able to deal more damage/pull my weight when it comes to melee.
I've read a lot of pally guides and threads, and if I've overlooked the answers to these questions, feel free to point them out; but if not, what would the rest of you suggest I do/use/obtain etc. to do a better job in the BGs?
Thanks to everyone!

Sadly MrSCH speaks truth.
I PVP'd as prot for a while and it's fun but it's far from optimum and as I started getting more into arena I moved away from it.
That said, in the chaos of a random BG optimum doesn't count for so much, and there are a few things you can do to tune yourself up.
This guide is a little out of date now (it pre-dates the vengeance changes for example) but most of it's still relevant: http://taugrim.com/2010/10/14/guide-wow-4-0-protection-paladin-class-mechanics/
Basically stack crit, sod mastery, glyph Avenger's shield and line up your trinket, wings and inquisition (keeping an eye out for sacred duty procs) for occasional burst.
