go jogging, then do random hard sprints when you feel the energy burst.
according to what some so called experts, eat small quantities. eat 6 small meals a day. do not eat dinner after 5 or 6. go to sleep around 9. staying up late will make u hungry, and when u are hungry, ur body tells you to walk to the refrigerator.
as for me, i like a big meal so i don't have to worry about eating 2 hours later. skeptics would not recommend it, i won't either cause i'm not a "professional?". i like my meals big. i want my eggs with bacon, sausages, pancakes, and a glass of orange juice. that's just how it's gotta be.
apply weight lifting. benefits with weight lifting is, you burn calories even without working out. focus on the big parts of ur body, such as ur thighs, chest. working out those 2 groups will burn out the most calories while not working out.
make a workout plan and stay strict to it. write on a piece of paper of what you should do.
for starters, i'd start at a comfortable level that guarantees that you will do it without complaining it's too long.
try this
day1: 10 pushups, 25 crunches, a light 10 minute jog or a 3 minute jog in place, arm dumbell workout for 3-4 minutes), shadow boxing for 5 minutes.
hold up. pushups are too hard, so stand up, put ur hands on ur bed, and do 5 pushups or as many as you can possibly comfortable do.
this is to look at things at a progressive. gotta start slow, comfortably gain confidence and comfort, and keep going, until 80 pushups is normal. yes, i used to 80 pushups without stopping. and i started with 3 pushups to begin with.
fruits are nice to have.
make sure when you diet, you don't stay on a strict 1,500 calorie diet. if you plan to work out, you need to eat healthy energetic foods so ur body will have energy to burn.
some of my goals were as simple as, "I just want to get stronger."
working out with that goal in mind went towards the right direction for me for the most part.
try jogging 1 lap a day, then walk the 2nd, stop. progress ur way to jog 1 mile a day, then 2.
advice: dont put ur weights and exercise equipment next to ur main computer. u gotta keep the 2 worlds separate.
i like putting my bench set, boxing bag, and weights in the garage, and i set a 5 minute timer so i know i will only be there for 5 minutes. after the 5 minute timer goes off, my brain doesn't want to stop, and i tend to stay for a good 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on my mood.
check craigslist for weights and fitness machines. sometimes, you'll find good deals. a bench set for 30 dollars with 150 pounds of weights. now that's a steal.
i played soccer in highschool and maintained a decent lean body. i was able to jog 3 miles no problem.
here's what we did
1. 25 yard sprints, do as many as you will it. probably 3.
2. 50 yard sprint 2 times
3. 100 yard sprints. 1 time
if you sprint like this everyday, there is no way you will fail. but sprinting is hard, and tiresome. you'll have those battles in ur head.
when you jog, jog at a slow comfortable pace just little enough to get ur heart beat going.
stretching is vital. stretch arms, legs, quads, calves, neck, lower back.
#1 goal, prevent injury, and safety first.
#2 goal, aim to work progressive and comfortably
#3 goal, eating times and sleep time.
it's 1:42 atm.. so in truth, i'm not even following the examples i'm giving you. therefore, the only solid t hing t hat i can say it.
eat healthy
work slowly and progressively
be optimistic about it
still debating if the placebo effect works or not for losing weight.
here's an ab workout. once every 5 minutes while you sit on ur chair on ur compputer. tighten ur abs for 2 seconds, then release. then do it again the next hour or until you remember it.
:l
SAFETY FIRST!
you don't want to go 110%, then 1 week later, u over-strain urself and tear an acl or meniscus. and you have no coverage and cannot afford 1,500 for an mri scan and other things needed, and a 3,400 surgery.. :l
one last thing, HERNIA! U DONT WANT THAT! so don't overdo it.
edit: here's a few of my workout songs. the moment i hear it, it motivates me to workout sometimes. that's how my brain is programmed at random intervals.

You can lose a lot of weight just by watching what you eat. No need for a lot of exercises or insane diets. One of my favorite chefs on tv lost 50 pounds just by eating from four basic food groups and avoiding things that are bad for you, such as alcohol and other fattening foods. His name is Alton Brown and the name of the episode is "Live and let Diet" in-case you want to watch it somewhere.
Here
he lists a couple of recipes he used during the episode. But for what he really did, you'll have to watch it.

I've lost about 5kg (11 pounds) in the past 2 weeks. I want to lose a further 5 pounds - once I've done that, I wouldn't mind fluctuating upwards and just keeping it as a baseine. I do
this workout
every other day, substituting the push ups for bicep curls since I can't do pushups properly. My personal trainer friend said it's better to alternate arms and legs and that he'd give me a full dumbell workout to do every other day and then the leg/stomach one I'd do the other day, but now he's on holiday :(. I buy 17p 2L bottles of water from the store, 5+ at a time. Ideally I'd just refill them, but sometimes they taste a little stale and the outside of the bottle gets wet when refilling them. Anyway, I keep one or two of those in my room at all times.
I have porridge oats for breakfast. Just hot water and oats, plus maybe an apple. I don't ever measure how much of them I eat because they're really healthy (though never more than one soup bowl). Then for dinner I have a sandwich with cottage cheese and two
vegetarian sausages
. During the day I can have as much fruit as I want and perhaps a yoghurt. Using this method I can drink alcohol and the days where I eat cake or whatever I tend to only put on a pound, which I lose pretty much immediately. At the moment though I don't have a job (have put applications in) and my unis out for the summer, so I don't have anything strenuous to do during the day.
Best of luck getting into the army.

Contact a personal trainer for a couple of sessions and let them make a program for you. And really a diet? In most cases its enough to lessen your intake a bit and perhaps chose some healthier alternatives of the same product.

I'm going to disagree. That's an easy way to burn money.

I do agree with this, though.
And this:I find that by engaging in active activities that I enjoy - losing weight becomes easier.
I go surfing but also walking and talking with a friend is a great way to exercise, as well.
:)
I lost about 60 lbs over the past four months by doing exactly that. I cut out soda, lessened my calorie intake and replaced some stuff with healthier stuff. It works more than any magic diet.

The reasoning behind this is not to have a regular appointment but to get the start help he need's so he gets a program that's suited for him/her and not the one that's suited for you or me. Also if he haven't done the exercise for a while he should have someone to actually show him how to do them.
With the food i've got pretty much the same argument as with the working out, the PT would have get a better picture of the situation OP is in, and if already making a plan it would be easy to give some tips related to food.

Thanks for all the input. As far as "magic diets"
Funden
Benzene, I'm not looking for a miracle pill/diet. I intend to do the work, but I also know that certain food groups have more fat and/carbs, so some "not-so-magic diets" cut them out.

The key to losing weight is using more calories than you take in, which means if you eat 2000 calories a day, you have to burn more than that to lose weight. Exercise is really important, I biked 10 miles every day for 3 months and lost 70 lbs, my diet wasn't "healthy food" although I did eat less of what i was eating.
So, eat less, exercise more, and don't cut out carbs and fats completely, if you do that your body goes into "starvation mode" and tries to conserve as much fat as it can.

A personal trainer isn't a horrible way to go... What you can do is join a gym with three free sessions built in, then not renew your gym membership or personal training sessions (unless you have the money and time spare and find it worthwhile).

Okay, here is my two cents....
I have always said that the hardest part about exercising is not exercising itself but putting your shoes on to go do it! Here are some tips that worked for me.
1) Decide if you are a "gym person" or not. Personally, I hate going to the gym but if that motivates you, then go for it! I also don't think it is necessary to hire a personal trainer. They can charge a lot of money!
2) Find the exercise activities that you like. On a whim moment, I once went out and bought a basketball hoop - probably the best $120 I spent. I love going out early in the morning or late at night, radio blaring, just shooting hoops. But the point is, find what you like to do! I also enjoy riding my bike. I am not a runner, I hate running....but that is just me.
3) This is going to be the hardest one and that is portion control. Just don't have seconds, limit alcohol and eat more fruits and veggies. Also, have a water bottle with you at all times. Are you one that hits the coffee stand every morning? Then make sure to get non-fat versions of whatever you like.
All of these things have helped me. I have lost about 16 pounds and counting. Good luck!

I'm probably the guy that works out the most on these forums, and since I swim professionally I also have to make sure I eat healthy and all that stuff. Because I take a lot of that stuff for granted, I'm not exactly sure what you know and what you don't, but if you want, I could write something like what facesmasher wrote that's not exactly in-depth, but still provides a good overview. Is there anything more specific you want/need to know, however, feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Reason i recommend a personal trainer is NOT to motivate you but to tailor a program/ food tips that's suited for OP. And as overzealous said we do not know what the OP know/ do not know. So lets take a pretty basic example, he like you do not like the gym but chose to run at a track nearby instead, do we know that OP knows that he should, like with everything start off easy with only 1 to 2 sessions a week for a time period?
Secondly Overzealous could throw out a some general like facesmasher did but with some slight moderation, with a swimmers perspective now lets say i did the same, while i would chose an different approach with a sprinters pow, now you have 3 different "programs", yet none of those 3 might be the one thats best suited for the OP.
I already plan to cut out soda.
There you have the money :)
stretching is vital. stretch arms, legs, quads, calves, neck, lower back.
Yet another argument for the PT for the starters, stretching isn't worth $%^& unless done properly.
So if you plan to really do this spend the money you save from not drinking soda, for that extra advice in the beginning.
The cheapest package i found had the same price as 120ish sodas where i live :)
