And for all we know in Book 2 of Korra, they'll find a lost tribe of Air Benders running around heh; it is a 'big' world after all.
you would NOT believe how much fan-fiction exists in the internet that uses this specific plot coupon to justify suddenly there being several airbenders.
you would just NOT believe it.
Edit:
Ok maybe you would believe it, its a large internet after all =P

Well, it's not
too
implausible to think that a few airbenders might have managed to escape the grip of the Fire Nation.

It seems like part of my last post got ignored :(
As for a stylistic variation in bending, that will come down to how someone else plans on teaching. Since Tenzin was taught by Aang, who was taught by the monks, Tenzin will also teach his kids like the monks. And it seems that the Air Nomads also had little variations as everyone was taught the same.
Whereas waterbending has 3 different styles, so there is variation there. But between TLA and LoK, waterbending has undergone more changes. Due to the rules in pro-bending, they had to change their styles from the long streams and fluid movements to quick jabs and use of their lower bodies like how earthebenders do.
Bending styles will also change depending on who is doing. Something you'll notice is how the Avatars will incorporate it into their main element. Most earth bending is rigid, but Aang does it like he does airbending. You can really notice it when he made that zoo outside Ba Sing Se, as well as other fights.
Since all airbending was exclusive to the Air Nomads, their way of bending was always the same. Even to be a master they had to study the same 36 tiers of airbending, meaning there wasn't much leeway there. And there may be other people born airbending, but when they seek training, there are only a select few people that will be there to teach them. And those people will have been taught by Tenzin, his kids, or even Korra.
I also believe at that point in time, most nations just stayed to themselves. But ever since the war had started, people have been moving about. I don't believe that many families had diverse bloodlines as they do now. We have Aang and Katara making air- and waterbending babies, and Mako and Bolin who are fire- and earthbending babies.

Yeah, I can see them maybe doing that. They did it with the Sky Bison after all.

But I was thinking, similarly to how the Northern and Southern Water Tribes developed their own cultures and bending techniques over time, couldn't something similar have happened at the different air temples, leading to more variation? This is pre-Sozin's Comet, of course.

Probably not at the original Air Nomad temples; since those ones were more of an Order type thing compared to the tribes of the Water Benders(I mean really, look at South Pole, North Pole and the Swamp Benders heh). But it is still 'possible' that some non-Air Nomad Air Benders may have survived the Fire Nation purge and went deep into hiding somewhere on the planet, and they'll show up when it's plot relevant.

Patty, the ending was that way because they had finished the writing before they knew they had a second season

I really really doubt that dude. Its been known that the show would have a second season (With an option to renew for a third one depending on its success) for almost a year and a half now. Seriously, when Legend of Korra was announced almost 3 years ago, they said "12 episodes only" and then 6 months later "ok nevermind, make that 26 episodes now"

They are half way done with the second season already, and its been a year since they started. By half-way, they mean they are done writing it all and are in the stage are animating it. It'll be another year or so for them to finish and have it airing. The same was true for the first part. They were probably done writing it and was in the middle of animation when they were told they were getting another season.
I know DiMartino said it was taking them 2 years to do each Book during TLA. It seems the same thing is true for LoK, even though they have fewer episodes.

Exactly.

These take the same time to produce despite their shorter duration because the animation took A SERIOUSLY HUGE jump in quality. Seriously, both the CGI effects, and the coloring, animation, and design took massive qualities that are just mind-boggling.
Love or hate it (and seriously, you have to be a really odd person to hate this show) Legend of Korra has got to be the most gorgeously animated show of this decade.

I marathoned the first season of Korra last night. Loved every minute of it.
Although the surprise returning voice actor in the last episodes rubbed me the wrong way.

That's a case of "Reality is Unrealistic"
General Iroh II is about 30 years old, and the voice actor (Dante Basco, same guy who voiced Zuko) is also in his 30's.
Yep, that's his normal voice. Thing is, we got used to that voice associated with a teen, so seeing that same voice now associated to an adult can be offputting. But that's Dante's real voice, and he's the same age as Iroh II

It's more that it's the
exact same voice
for two different characters.

so? Avatar Kyoshy and Juno the huntress have the same voice actress, nobody seems to mind, why? (Aside from how they both show only twice on the whole show) because they are of the same age, so the voice of the actress fits them both.
In this case though, Basco's unchanged normal voice was used on a teen, and then an adult, which can cause some confusion.

You just answered the point. Avatar Kyoshi and Juno are nowhere near as prevalent in the show as Zuko was. That makes it grating. It would be similar to if Sokka's voice actor played Bolin. He could have at least had a different voice for Iroh. That's what voice actors are supposed to do.

Nathanyal
Well it won't be much of a big deal if Iroh II isn't around that much. Of course it wouldn't hurt is Basco made his voice lower for Iroh II.
If we do happen to meet Elder Zuko, I wonder if Basco will still voice him. Make an old sounding voice.

I'm kind of sure he will become important. He's too shippable to leave behind.

It's never stated what age Iroh 2 is. It's said that he's the youngest general/admiral that the UF has ever had, so I doubt very much that he's anywhere but in his early 20s

Yup, I doubt he is 30. Early-mid 20s imo. He doesn't look much older than Korra and her friends, who happen to be in their late teens.

Yeah, Korra's 17, Mako's 18 and Bolin is 16 according to the wiki. Dunno about Asami, but I presume about 18 as well. I'd put Iroh at ~21-24.
