Aaand just finished watching chapter 2.
Ok, its official now, new villains are AWESOME.
I love that the creators are not afraid of trying out something new instead of a rehash of a previous bad guy in a different suit.
First we got Amon, a completely unique form of enemy, then we had Unalaq, and while I didn't liked the execution, I liked the concept of an anti-avatar bad guy, as a main villain.
Now? we have an evil Team Avatar =D
A cabal of 4 ultra-powerful benders with unique abilities that make them BADASS. An earthbender that can liquefy earth into magma (o_o) a waterbender that had her arms amputated and yet can still bend either with her face, or with her mind (o_O) and a female version of "Combustion Man" that can create explosions as well as firebend with her head (O_O) along with a guy who basically self-taught himself Airbending in the span of a single week.
I can't wait to see what they'll do.

Episode 8 was amazing.
Everything about it really, but that soundtrack really drives the tension up like nothing else does.

That episode was DARK AS %^&*

I'm just gonna put this on a big spoiler block since i know there's a lot of folks here who haven't seen this season yet. Read at your own risk.
But HOLY MOTHER OF GOD this episode was dark indeed. First time they ever show an on-screen death. I mean, previously people were implied to have died, or died offscreen. For example on the finale for TLA, Sokka uses his sword and his boomerang to knock two firebenders off the airship, down into a hard rock canyon. Its pretty obvious those two died, even if we never saw their bodies hit the rocks.
But as of the latest episode, yep, directly shown.
The Red Lotus is really the most impressive set of villains I've seen yet on this franchise, and can give Ozai, Azula, and Amon a run for their money. I can't say I was sad to see the Earth Queen die, but good god, that was chilling. Death by slow painful asphyxiation isn't something pretty. Specially when they zoom in on her wide open bloodshot eyes, as she desperately tries to gasp for breath, and can't due to the vacuum Zaheer made around her head. Using the air from her own lungs no less.
And just like that, Zaheer turned what was considered the most passive and defensive form of bending, into the stuff nightmares are made of.
Then there's Gazhan bringing down the wall of Ba Sing Se by himself. Previously, it took the entire army of the Fire Nation, a Comet-Empowered Iroh, and half a dozen Dai Li to do the same. This guy did it solo.
And finally, the Dai Li, a group that in TLA gave the "Gaang" a run for their money, who always stayed one step ahead of them, and were like REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY hard to bring down, The Red Lotus took out a dozen of them in a whooping total of
fifteen seconds
.
I don't want to see these guys go, I'm sincerely hoping this season ends on a cliffhanger, and continues on to Season 4. I really REALLY do. I swear to god almighty, BEST.VILLAINS.EVER.
End of Story.

Why would a creature that burrows around in sand have gills.

They were tethered. They didn't fall.

Still, there were other instances of it being played straight.

Imagine if they killed off one of the main characters.

Imagine if they killed off one of the main characters.
Possible spoilers, something Bryke said in an interview somewhere. Blocking it off just in case:
Bryke has stated that the season finale (which is next week) will be far more emotional than the previous episodes, and I believe they hinted at a main character death. They also said that something will happen that none of us will be expecting, which might be related to said death.

Haha anybody else notice Grey DeLisle sliding back into the Azula voice a few times during the finale?
This last episode was pretty dark. I know some of us were wondering if maybe they were going to kill a main character, but even though they didn't the end was still pretty heartbreaking.

So..... I kept a running tally of how many times this episode made me utter the words HOLY S#$%.
It was 36.
THIRTY SIX
.
Its official, this is
by far
the best season of Legend of Korra. EVER.
That ending though :( so bittersweet, and this time they didn't chickened out like in the first season where they pulled a last-second happy ending, this time it was full blown bittersweet to the very end.
On the one hand, Jinora gets her tattoos.
This

this
=
This.
On the other hand, Korra is left both emotionally traumatized, and left in a wheelchair. I'm wondering if they're actually gonna keep that up all the way for season 4.
Finally, hands down, Red Lotus = BADASS. Far far and above any other villain in the Avatarverse bar none. Zaheer himself fought Korra while in the Avatar state and held his own amazingly. Lets remember that last time we saw Aang fighting in full berserker-mode Avatar State with the Fire Lord, he made him his #$%& during his entire fight. This time, Zaheer stood face-to-face with an enraged avatar in the Avatar state and held his own. She was weakened by the poison, but still man, Sheesh. That fight seriously gives the one of Aang vs Ozai a run for its money in the awesome department, and its where the
HSQ
drew the majority of the tally during the fight.
It was pretty damned ingenious how Mako defeated Ming-hua, equally so how Suyin defeated P'li. On a side-note, her death must have left behind quite an ugly gory mess. The metal shell over her head would focus the force of the blast into a tiny area, while the opening around her neck would direct the force down like a shaped charge. It's very likely that her own skull fragments ripped the rest of her body apart as shrapnel. *shudder*

Say what!?!?!?! o_O
That's AWESOME. No having to wait a year to see the epic conclusion of Korra's story.
In retrospective though, I dunno if they plan to continue the Avatar franchise after this, with a sequel set even more years later, or a prequel set in the distant past, but Korra's overall story, just didn't feel as grand as Aangs.
Aang had 3 seasons of build up to a major goal, and it paid off in a climax confrontation the likes of which has rarely been seen before in animation. Korra's story however, is a recopilation of isolated incidents, with no direct relation between each other, making them feel less epic in scope. It would had been great if Korra had a specific arch-enemy from the start and she works on defeating this enemy from season 1 all the way to season 4.
Zaheer would had made a spectacular villain for this, but alas, his entire story was contained within season 3, and he's unlikely to be back.
IF they decide to continue the franchise with a sequel, or a prequel, I hope they go back to the format used on the first show, with a larger broader story told through multiple seasons, as opposed to the self-contained seasons with no relation to each other.
Isn't that one going to be just online though?
Makes no difference to me honestly, since I can't watch the show on tv, and thus have to watch it online regardless.
