I seem to have accidentally ended up with this being my default search engine/homepage. AVG free and Spybot S&D find no threats, yet control panel won't let me reset to google as my home page. Can I trust this thing? How do I go back to the way I had it before?

I'd be worried about this.

Yep. Me too. Managed to set it to avg secure search, but I'm still worried that there might be something nasty on my computer.

Wiki says this

It doesn't appear under programs to uninstall. How do I locate it and remove it?

You can go to the registry (win + r, regedit) and look for it there, though if you delete the wrong thing it could seriously mess with your computer.
I'd also recommend posting this to geekstogo. Last I recalled, their advice usually centres on downloading MBAM/ComboFix, posting a log and downloading CCleaner and running that. ComboFix can get rid of hidden programs I think.
I'd also recommend going to msconfig and editing startup programs. Get rid of anything that looks suspicious from the startup.
Personally I'd recommend switching to firefox and running noscript too. Never had my browser hijacked or unwanted search bars installed on firefox. My parents had their PC hijacked once though, see if you can download and run executables and access task manager (ctrl + alt + del). If you can access the bleedingcomputer/malwarebytes/microsoft websites without getting a redirect or a 404, task manager and executables, it's probably nothing major.
