I am gonna roll a new toon to use for pvp, opposed to usual the pve that I play.
I was wondering what peoples thoughts on leveling a character for pvp are, same as usual through lots of questing or should something else?

If you're leveling through BGs, make sure to do dungeons on the side. The gear from them far outweighs any of the honor gear, and you can get it much faster.
You could also do questing, but that would undermine the purpose of leveling through PvP, no?

Do lots of BGs, both for the experience and training, and for the honor. Try to be in the best honor gear you can get at your level (especially at 60+). Before level 40, the gear you can get with honor is kinda meh, but at 40+ there are better rewards (eg. WSG epic bracers). If you have enough honor for the next set of gear, though, run dungeons, both to fill the other gear slots and to level faster.

I've never leveled doing pvp (bg) only, because i'm guessing it will take much longer.
I'm not talking queue times alone, but if you lose a BG (which can take a long time to finish), you'll get little XP for it. Add to that low XP battlegrounds like WSG, where there's fewer objectives to give XP...
On top of that, there's several other disadvantages to pvp levelling:
- Rested xp is worth nothing, since killing an enemy player doesn't give XP.
- No income. Questing in Outland, Northrend and Cata gives a nice stack of gold.
- Once you hit cata, you'll miss a lot of rep and some portals. Some of which can only be attained through a lengthy quest line (Therazane rep for example). Rep that provides you with valuable enchants.
Leveling through pvp is just not for me i guess.

Exposure is key.
If possible I would recommend you level on a high populated PvP realm for your first PvP toon (jump in the deep end.) As much as you may want to stay on the realm you're familiar with, leveling a toon on a crowded PvP realm really teaches you things that BGs alone sometimes can't. To be a good PvPer you want to develop a sixth sense for pre-emptive striking, crowd control & survival and I find the mechanics of BGs sometimes deprives you of that because you're expecting an attack in certain spots so you don't really learn anything new, nothing beats being always battle ready due to the paranoia you develop on PvP realms nor learning how to protect yourself after being grieffed for hours straight.
Leveling on a PvP realm you learn what favourite spells classes use against your class and after being torn a new one many times over you learn what counter spells you have to protect, damage and break CCs and eventually you'll find at times you can pre-empt what the other player will do. Basically it's in your face everyday so you can't help but learning how to become the best PvPer you can be. You learn to become aware of your surroundings, learn your strengths & weaknesses, learn about the other classes strengths & weaknesses and eventually you just get a natural feel for it.
Personally speaking I can tell when I'm faced with a PvE player in arenas/BGs because they kind of flounder around like a fish out of water. A player from a PvP realm is more calculating, they play you until you show them your power hand then they take you down hard - that's the kind of player you want to be and personally I think that comes from the unplanned everyday exposure they get from a PvP realm *nods sagely*
Here are some good Addons you want to keep close (there are others but these are pretty badass.):
GladiatorlosSA (it's a talking addon, you don't have a interface as such.)
OmniCC
LoseControl
Healers have to die
Interupt bar (if you're a caster)
If you choose to remain on PvE just try and get as much variety of PvP exposure as you can. If you find you're not learning anything new move onto something else (like arenas or even just quest being flagged.) Just be aware that leveling a PvP toon on a PvE realm is a slow process in the sense you need goals to help motivate you or you'll end up just speed leveling another PvE toon.
In a nut shell leveling on a PvP realm gives you the freedom to quest with the possibility of random PvP because that's the nature of the beast. Leveling on PvE will restrict you to BGs which can be slow and dull.
Have fun, PvP is badass and so much fun (♥_♥)

Yeah definitely roll on a high pop PvP server. Nothing like the danger of being attacked at any moment, or the thrill of attacking someone randomly!
