QOTD Thread #332- Do you think that people should keep cats outdoors?

I don't think anyone is talking about regulation here, Doctor. Like- how do you vote with your wallet? The question is about what YOU think about it. Debate of the day is in the other thread.

Violence in games is usually fun and cathartic. However I agree with you to an extent, Elhonna - when it gets to the point where the games are glorifying a victim's suffering, then it's opening up a lot of potential for trouble.
As for sex etc in games, I can take it or leave it most of the time. "Pixel porn" doesn't exactly turn me on, and considering most games have pretty clunky dialogue, trying to work it into the story is usually a massive fail. I
don't mind
actually quite like it if it's there for artistic purposes or whatever, like if there's a red-light district for example.

Personaly, I don't see anything wrong with it. Those who are old enough to understand what the games are showing and being able to understand it's wrong and can't be done in the real world (IF it is something like that; i.e. murder, rape) should not have those portions of games limited for them because someone who shouldn't have the game gets their hands on it.
All within reason, of course. Obviously too much is too much, as with nearly anything in the world.

I think it's dependent on the opinions of the consumers. What I think, however, is that as long as it's not breaking anything within moral bounds and helps to enhance or is integral to the story, then I'm inclined to think it's alright.

Anything that goes into a rated R movie, I'm fine with being in a video game. Parents just have to realize what is in the game and censor their kids appropriately.
Agreed. Although I do remember playing Conkers Bad Fur Day growing up and my folks just thinking it was a cute cartoony video game. Then they actually sad and watched me play and found out what it really was about. Needless to say it was returned to the neighbor kid the same day and I was grounded for a couple months.
But that was also when kids had a head on their shoulders and didn't need to be told "don't try this at home" everytime they see someone throwing machetes at squirrels.

Heh, I had the same issue with Mortal Kombat and my mom; she didn't want it in the house but well...I wanted to play it lol. And I had a the Sega Genesis, so I had the 'real' one and not the watered down SNES version ^_^.

ULTRA-LONG POST OF DOOM STARTING
/inhale
Out of curiosity, for people who have answered that they enjoy female nudity specifically, would you be bothered if there was, in response to the growing female gamer demographic, a sharp rise in male nudity/sexuality in your games. Like if they started making a lot of shirtless male armor, or conversations with male NPC's got very explicit when you were playing as a female character. Not the avoidable stuff, like in Mass Effect, where you just turn them down and no one bothers you afterwards, but as part of the story.
Not really, no.
I played God of War 1 and 2, a game where almost everyone is pretty much naked. Men and Women alike. Kratos wears nothing more than a speedo, a skirt, and a pair of boots for all of the first game, and a good chunk of the second game (in the second he also gets bracers, and a single shoulder-pauldron). It didn't bothered me in the least (seriously, that game has some of the BEST character/armor designs EVER. Did you look at that pic I linked on the skyrim thread? that was from God of War 2, and one hell of a cool AND sexy armor)
What do you think about adult content in video games?
What do I think of it? that games aren't meant to be for children only. Adults play games too, so there should be adult-themed games as well. Of course by "adult-themed" I don't mean "excessive sex and violence, here, take a chainsaw and chop heads everywhere for no reason, and bang every woman you find". A game like what I just described is far from adult, its pretty much a child's interpretation of what adult means.
As others have said, the witcher takes a very mature approach to very adult themes like racism, sexuality, violence, political tension, and more. its not a game I'd let a child play, but I'm glad it exists for those of us that aint child no more.
What do you think about nudity in games (or at least strong sexual themes), like the Witcher, Grand Theft Auto, Mass Effect, etc.
As others have said, as long as its not distracting, exaggerated, or taking focus away from the plot, I don't mind. Neither male nor female nudity (even though almost no game has had the balls to display male nudity. I guess most pre-teen boys freak out when they see a penis, but high-five each other when they see boobies. Try and count how many games with boobies are out there vs how many with wieners.)
What do you think about very graphic violence, violence against innocent people, simulating criminal activity?
Again, I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't think this encourages violent behavior, and I don't think it desensitizes people to violence.
I personally am more off-put by playing a game where you perform cruel and/or evil actions than ones where there is nudity. I can't play the "bad guy" in terms of games where there is a morality scale.
Why not? Do you think you will become evil if you do evil in a game? its just roleplaying. I don't like games where you are only allowed to be good or be evil, I like a game where you can immerse yourself on the world and decide what kind of person you want to be. Most of the time we will choose to act in the game as we would in real life, and that's great, but at least in my case, there's also times where I wanna act as an "anti-me" if you know what I'm saying.
I'm seeing gaming heading towards a place where I'm going to be really uncomfortable with the level of detail in which these kinds of actions are displayed, and how people will still find it "funny" to make the choice in the game to do that. I know it's not real, but I find some of it disturbing to even enjoy in an abstract sense.
Why? lemme ask you a question sweetie. If you were an actress, would you really enjoy your work if you were forced to do the EXACT SAME CHARACTER all the time? in every show, in every movie, in every single theater production you are forced to be this sweet valley girl that picks up flowers, helps the orphan, kisses kittens, and frolics in the forests. Then a producer asks you if you would like to play the role of Mrs. Lovett, the lover and partner in crime of Sweeny todd.
In case you don't know the play, Todd is a serial killer, he is a barber, that traps people in his basement, slits their throats with a razor blade, and then Mrs Lovett chops them all up, cooks them and makes meat pies out of the victim's corpses and sells them on the streets.
Would it bother you to play that role? its not like you're actually going to kill someone, you're just playing a role.
I see no difference in that, in playing games. its just a role. I was into acting when i was in highschool, but since I always had hiccup in front of large audiences, I never could realize my dream of becoming an actor, but in games,. specially open RPG games, I can. And thus, while I make a "main toon" that displays my core personality, how I act in the world, the morality I use, the code by which I live, I also roleplay an "evil" version of me.
basically what I would had been if I had been raised by someone with no scrupulous or morals and then tossed in an environment of pure adulterated violence and barbarism (Sabaneta) The end result would NOT had been pretty. And yet I find some level of enjoyment in playing that "anti-me" just as I'd be happy to play a different gamma of characters if I had actually managed to get into theather. I would had hated to always have to play the dutiful father stuck in a crappy job, but doing his best to raise his family.
Games are doors into the unknown where you can for a few minutes NOT be yourself, and instead be someone else. Why not take the chance? its not like you're going to become what you play (which regardless of what the media may say JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN)
This is why for example, on SWTOR, I had my agent, which was a more morally gray character (sorta like how I am in the real world) and also had a Sith warrior which was PURE EVIL. In mass effect I have my main shepard which is 60% renegade 40% paragon (again, how I am IRL; I think of myself as "Chaotic Neutral" in terms of alignment) but I also had a completely asshat shep too.
You should see just how many different characters I roleplayed on New Vegas (now THAT is a game that offers a wide wide WIIIIIIIIDE variety of moral alignments. And while the evil one is pretty obvious, the good one............. heh, good luck trying to figure that one out)
The one moment where I draw a line is with raping. I don't recall any (modern) game that allows you to rape someone, but if there is, you can be sure I wont be doing that. No way. No how. Raping is a special sort of evil. (the only game I recall that allows you do to something like that is Dragon Age 1. In there you can blackmail a young girl to sleep with you in return for you not revealing an embarrassing secret about her. I think it counts as raping, as its clearly non-consensual, but thankfully its offscreen)
And I truly believe that if I myself was evil, even then I'd still not rape anyone.
With criminal acts (Grand Theft Auto), I think it's wrong to glorify that stuff and I refuse to play any game that involves it.
Humm....... Ireney, last I checked, Grand Theft Auto doesn't glorifies criminal acts. Last time I checked, kill someone and you get the cops on you, you are punished by doing wrong stuff such as stealing, assaulting, or killing.
I don't think there are any true games out there that actually glorify criminal acts (as in they REWARD you for being evil) in most games, you can be evil but the game punishes you.
Murder someone in skyrim, you get a bounty, and have to fight back (you won't see that by saving a kitten) Shoot someone in GTA and the cops are on to you. Even on New Vegas, ally yourself with the evil faction and 70% of the NPCS will attack you on sight, and you will be unable to complete most of the quests because everyone hates you.
Even in the Hitman franchise (a game where you play the role of Agent 47, a paid assassin) you get punished by killing innocent people by getting a lower score, and less money (this includes even the HIRED THUGS of the target you are trying to kill, and even the very targets you get to kill are always criminals, terrorists, drug-lords, rapists, kidnappers, ect)
Even Assassin's Creed (Another game where you play as an assassin) also punishes you for doing criminal acts. Go around chopping heads of civilians and its game-over.
A game that glorifies criminal acts is a game that not only has zero penalties to being evil but actually rewards you for it. And I don't think such a game exists. (well, there is Jade Empire. Play that game as a Closed Fist monk and not only you get away with it, you also get to do all the game and have zero negative repercussions, except most of your partymembers die............ by your hands no less.)
But yes, other than Postal (which is a really boring game) Carmageddon (which is an even more boring game) and Jade Empire, I don't think there's any other game out there that handles you prizes for being evil (even Jade Empire doesn't really counts, you don't get punished for being evil, but you don't get rewarded either, unlike the Open Palm (AKA: Good) way.)

Well, you can get cash from running people over. In fact, there's no way not to progress in the games by stringently obeying the law as far as I know, lol.
As to the question in general: not really too concerned either way. Hypersexualised characters detract from the plot whether they're nude or not. I second your opinion about feeling uncomfortable doing something really heinous in game such as
torture
. As the comments point out though, the average player decimates populations using numerous sadistic talents daily. The only time our actions in games really do cause displeasure is in PvP, kill stealing or defrauding.
I remember my friend refused to kill a cow in RuneScape for meat and got me to do it for him in order that he could complete a quest. I asked why and he said cows were venerated in Hinduism. I told him that I was fairly sure murder was frowned on too and he'd need to do that in order to complete the quest... I guess there's a disconnect at some point.

#151- How old were you when you stopped getting excited about your birthday? Or do you still?
Post by
OverZealous
I still get somewhat excited about my birthday, but not like i used to - now It's more about getting to see my relatives (at least the ones I like, the other ones could GTFO and I'd be a lot happier) and stuff like that. I guess I stopped getting that excited about the gift-aspect of birthdays around 12-13 years.
Post by
Skithus
I dunno, define excited. I still make note of it, but I don't really celebrate it at all. Prior to a year ago the last time i had a party or anything was when I was like 9 or 10.

I didn't enjoy my teen birthdays much at all, since I was living in quite a restrictive household at the time and didn't really do anything exciting for them.
When I moved out, though, my excitement was rekindled. The stories I could tell you about my 18th, 19th and 20th birthdays would probably get me banned from Wowhead. :D Then for my 21st, I booked a holiday house on the Gold Coast and took a bunch of friend up there and we partied up in Surfers Paradise - that was probably the peak of excitement as far as birthdays go for me.
I did nothing for my 22nd. I went to work, my workmates bought me a cheesecake, came home, my brother's girlfriend bought Indian food, then I went to the gym. So yeah I'm kinda over birthdays now, I've had my 21st and the rest are all downhill. Other big milestones in Australia are usually marked by large, fairly lame gatherings of family and friends in the backyard with a couple of cases of beer and bowls of Cheezels and salt & vinegar chips on the table. Generally very polite, forgettable, small-talk kind of stuff.

21.
Because after you hit 21 you're old enough to do stuff legally. Now my birthday is just another day, and although we get it of at my work I never take it off.

About 12 or 13, I think. I still like receiving gifts, of course, but I don't see the point.

Around 12 or so.
Around 12 as well
I haven't had a birthday "party" since I was 9. I mean, we still celebrate my birthday, with the cake the gifts, and all that, but its just my closest family (Dad, mom, little bro', best 2 friends ever, wife, and kids. And Bianca) rather than an actual party with a list of guests, music, food for everyone, ect.
To me, a birthday is just another day, nothing to be excited about like "OMG OMG OMG in 5 days is my birthday! =D". I suppose I still like to be congratulated on my birthday, but little else.
Also, Elhonna changed her icon................... O_O
