So far the information is that epic gems have a chance to drop for each player from the Deathwing raid (only normal and hardmode,
excluding random raids
).
Nothing has been said yet about the possibility to get them via prospecting, honor or JP.
I am guessing the recipes will be purchased as before with tokens, but the gems will be available from prospecting and transmuting as well.
EDIT:
Transmutation of epic gems is now on the PTR.
Queen's garnet
and the rest will be transmuted by an alchemist. No cooldown is in there yet, but I suspect it will be shared 1 day CD with all other transmutes on CD.
The other important thing is that the JC recipes can be learned via
Tome of Burning Jewels
, which could be a drop(terrible idea, remember inscription's tome?) or bought with JC tokens (which is not so bad, introduces some RNG to the process of obtaining recipes) or <
insert your idea here?
> some other way.
So far the recipes have not been added to the JC trainer's vendor list.
EDIT 2:
There is now a vendor for the
Tome of Burning Jewels
who sells the tome for 4 JC tokens. The recipes themselves cost 5 tokens each, so the tome gives a discount and an element of RNG (there are 51 epic recepies from the vendor) A guy with 205 tokens does not need to buy a single recipe he can get them all from the tomes with 20% discount.
EDIT 3:
There are three bag-like items which could be a raid drop (or possibly crafted by a JC)
Crystalline geode
my guess is this will be droped by either Raid finder or crafted by JC. Does not guarantee epic gems according to the wordings.
Perfect Geode
- can contain any of the epic uncut gems.
Elementium-Coated Geode
the best geode according to me, because it drops only red, orange or purple epic uncut gems.

Other than that, I am wondering if some of the gems will be pre-cut like in the BC heroic dungeons

I am witholding judgement (and wall of wailing QQ) until more info is released. Right now, it really seems like JC / X-Mute Alchy's really got shafted on this round. It really seems as if Blizz is pushing everyone toward the "standard" crafting professions (Tailor, LW, BS), and making JC's and Scribes more of a secondary profession.
I guess we shall see. I really hope I haven't been stocking up tons of Pyrite ore for nothing.

So true, I am hoping for the same.

I have just under 1000 pyrite ores, so yeah, I am on the same boat. What is it with Blizz this expansion making it impossible for PvPer's to make money with professions? It is bad enough I can't get chaos orbs without doing 5-mans over and over, and I can't get recipes without doing dailies and/or questing enough to open up the right phased areas. Now they want to make it so epic gems are raid drops. What next? Are they going to make a new ore that you can only mine in 5-man heroics? Maybe an herb that only grows in raid instances?

Well they did that with ZG pre cata.
Im going to bet that they will scratch the raid only idea and go to being available from transmuting or prospecting or else a firestorm of QQs will erupt on the official forums.

I'm debating between prospecting everything now, and possibly loosing out on the powder that would drop, or prospecting them later, when volatile earth is going to be worthless.
Exactly, however I am going to hold on to the volatiles even if I have to keep them for the next expansion, when they will be considerably more expensive (I hope)

I really hope that people HAVE been stocking up Pyrite for nothing.
That would be hilarious.
Cheers.

JC epic gems given to non-jcs!
Guess it is JCs turn to be the "EVIL/GREEDY" ones and ite the bullet for the "make the many happy".Fine, so if JC is now practically forced into providing a cutting service, instead of being able to sell the end product, we are being thrown out of the AH and onto the streets to cry, "
LFW rare cuts 20g, epic cuts 500g
".
I thought that the raw epic gems were going to be BoE drops in raids. So a JC will buy them from the AH, cut them, and sell them at a premium. Is that not the case?
This is quite correct. But I still remember a situation in BC when the epic gems were introduced(as raid drops) and despite the gold was worth more back then and you still could transmute them, one epic gem cost 600-700g. Can you imagine with the inflation now? It can cost up to 10 times more for a single gem. What about ppl who don't raid, but do high ranked arena? The raiding people would have an unfair advantage by getting drops rather then buy them for a small fortune.

PS. My main is actually a Herb/JC. I don't like this change. Doesn't mean Enchanters didn't get screwed, by a VERY similiar type of change.
So, you are saying that making enchanting mats widely available(screwing Enchanters) is the same as making JC mats exceptionally rare? I don't get you logic... If epic gems go live as raid drops only, red gems will cost 10k. Who is screwed? The JC-er(who will buy it uncut for 9k and sell it cut for 10k) or the guy who wants to buy it?
I am not a JC, I do PvP and I don't raid, this screws me big time...

I'm not a JC... I am a miner, and I was really looking forward to the price of Pyrite to skyrocket for a little while when all the JC's start buying it up for prospecting. As it is now, mining is falling behind in the money making category, and it has the least useful bonus of all professions.
