How to get LFD pugs to use lightwell

How do other Holy priests get LFD pugs to use the Lightwell?
I have found that only about 10% of the people in pugs understand a. how to use it and b. it can be used at range. I have been debating on starting the group with instruction, but would expect to get some flack from many in the groups.
So, I am looking for others input to see what they do.

You could macro in a statement letting them know that you have dropped it. May or may not help.

So far using
lightwell counter
with message of "Lightwell is up, please use it" does not seem to help :(.
Like I said in the OP I am thinking that I will start the LFD pugs with a quick instruction including dropping one and having the members use it to see how it works.
I know that when I have been in PUGs that have members that understand how to use it I have an easier time in my boss fight healing.

I was thinking that that would happen, I think people are too busy not dieing/watching tv to actually click on one of the best healing spells in the whole damned game. Sigh. Schooling them at the intro would be a good idea.

When I get home from work and run a pug or 2 I will try the schooling at the beginning and let y'all know how it goes.
I am hoping I can get more to understand how to use it as it does make the boss fights much easier to heal.

Put in your macro how much your Lightwell heals for. For my priest, that's a little over 20k. That's more than anything except Divine Hymn and Greater Heal.
Once people start realising just how massive the heal from Lightwell is these days they might think about using it, but they often forget that it's there, since not every group hyas a priest. Just keep spamming the macro telling them to use it while you are in combat. They will get the message eventually. Or they will kick you. And if they do, they are bads.

You don't, baddies will be baddies.
This. I don't even bother trying anymore.

It's dissapointing really. Cause holy's healing is balanced around people using it. Maybe that's why people claim it's under powered, cause no one uses the best tool we have.

I find that it gets used quite often when i drop it in PvP. Maybe PvPer's are just more aware of healing. /shrug

No, that's really not the issue. The question here was about random LFG PUGs. Raiding with a competent group (one that isn't too stupid to click lightwells, among other things) is a completely different issue, and that is the situation where holy is a comparatively under powered spec.

Well the first experiments with attempting to teach LFD PUGs went poorly, an I am just now going to try my second attempts.
I lost power for about 30 hours thanks to Irene ;(

You say that like ALL lfg pugs are terrible. That's impossible. A few weeks ago I was randoming on my lock, and lo and behold, the tank in my group was from Paragon. No #$%^.
But my point is, Blizz balance Holy's other spells around the idea that people will click the lightwell. But it just doesn't happen that way. Which makes Holy seem under powered. Actually, it is under powered anyway. Divine Hymn is a joke next to Tranq, PoH and CoH are mediocre, HW: Sanc is just bloody awful, especially when you put it next to Healing Rain.

I never said anything even close to that. On the original topic all I said is that I don't bother trying to convince/force/etc anyone to use the lightwell. Either they do or they don't, there isn't really anything that you can do to change it.

Yep.

Nope.
Like I said before, a
competent
raid group will know how to use a lightwell. If someone tries to argue that holy is a bad spec because they don't like clicking on the lightwell, feel free to just write them off as terrible and ignore whatever they have to say. The spec has problems, but other people being bad/lazy is not the issue.

Holy is under powered, but not for the reasons you listed (most of which I strongly disagree with, but this is long enough and off topic enough already that I won't get into that). Basically, there are two healing specs that have no raid survivability cooldowns, resto druid and holy priest. They fill the same niche, raid/group healing. Of the two, druids have higher HPS and fewer mana issues. For an ideal raid comp there is really no reason that you would take a holy priest over a resto druid, they're doing the exact same job and the druid just does it better.
And before anyone feels the need to jump in with personal anecdotes about how they heal the pants off of resto druids all the time, things like player skill, experience and gear level do obviously matter. All other things being equal though, druids do outperform holy at the same job right now.

Well after the latest attempts, I will still use the chat line from lightwell counter, but not worry whether they use it or not.
I started this to see if any others had anything that seemed to work, but was afraid of what has been said. I find that maybe 10 to 15 % of the PUGs that I group with seem to use it and I will just keep doing as I have been, throw it up on the boss fights and keep an eye on it.
I have found that small chats with some who do use it helps, that is those that only use it when next to it. I have had several occasions where after a quick conversation with the one who did it more in the seem to use it properly.

I think the real problem has to do with the mechanics of it. At least Blizzard finally put a decent range on the thing, so you don't have to be standing right next to it! But players must still pause and actively click the Lightwell. Players who don't want to lift a finger from any key that isn't burning a hole in the head of some mob, and upping their DPS numbers.
I think it would be nice if we could macro to target and /use a Lightwell, without having to actively mouseover, wait for the "use" cog, and then click. Or, if the Lightwell's functionality were redesigned to function a bit more like a Warlock's cookie bowl. But hey... you don't see many of these players using Lock cookies either, right?
Trying to make non-healers feel responsible for their own healing is a huge hurdle. The concept is entirely alien to many people who have never healed at all. 80% of the DPS, and at least 30% of the tanks out there, I'd estimate. The worst part out there is, if they die, they think YOU suck, and not themselves. In their minds, it's YOUR job to clean up THEIR mess. Welcome to Healing.
It's not any better in the real world either. I'm a Nurse.

Congrats on grouping with a tank who is in a guild that is present on every server. It's like the guild equivalent of Legolas.
You think I didn't check? noob.
