This is my fantasy news topic for the month. The first season of George R. R. Martin's book-into-TV-show adaptation is out, and let me tell you - this thing is damn amazing. I am popping up here to inform the entire world that I am now 800% happier, and over 9000% giddier. I should be able to say something constructive, but my brain is going "happyhappyhappyhappyhappyhappyhappyhappyhappy" non-stop. Maybe later.

I like it. I'm excited to see were it goes from here. But at the same time... I guess I expected more? It seemed kind of disjointed and rushed, trying to fit so much into one episode. But I can understand that, we need to get to the good stuff. (My other half complained that it was hard to follow for someone that hasn't read the books.)
I'm not really happy with how much they've aged some of the characters. But I guess I can understand that too, with some of the situations that young children are put in. I'm looking at you Daenerys. And what was up with her wedding night? That totally changes Khal Drogo's character. That's the one thing that
really
irked me. Not pleased with that at all.

Whatwhatwhatwhat? I need to watch this immediainstantly O.o
@Kalisha: They aged the characters? I'm sorry to hear that, but like you, I am not surprised, Khal Drogo more or less rapes Daenerys later on and that, i suppose, wouldn't be much liked by the general audience.

Loved the first episode, this is supposed to stay on air till Entourage & Curb Your Enthusiasm come back on I believe, so its a win-win for me heh. Having never read the books (and probably wont due to the limited time I have already) I felt it was easy to get into and not something I was stuck asking myself "wtf is going?"
kinda sucked to see the youngest of Neds sons die right off the bat like that, he seemed he couldve provided some entertaining bits. Spoilered this just incase someone like me, who wants to watch it and missed the first ep but didnt read it sees this.

I thought it was really good for the most part. Really though, I was just hoping for less nudity. I mean, I was totally expecting it since I've read the books and it was HBO. Still, I would have liked it more without it. Some parts it seemed like they were throwing in bewbage just for the heck of it. The scene with Tyrion and the whores at Winterfell? That wasn't in the books. Visaerys undressing Daenarys? He pinched her nipple, but he didn't undress her. I dunno. I've got mixed feelings right now, I guess I'll have to watch some more before I make up my mind.

He's not dead.
oh snap really? I didnt want to think so but I came to the conclusion when I saw the family around the tree where Ned was at in the episode and figured that was where there buried him, and of course when it seemed Catelyn said Jaime killed him while he was banging Cersei. Of course I will find out when the next episode comes around, it couldve just been their editing to make me think that.
Oh and just wanted to put this out there, HBO has a Viewers Guide page for the show
Here
you can click at the top right on the Guide to Houses to for some history about all the Houses, be helpful for those who didnt read the books.

No, that tree and the pool is their family "alter" or "church". It's their godswood. It's where they go to pray. All Stark are buried in a crypt underground. Where King Robert asked Ned to take him so he could pay his respects to Lyanna (the woman he was supposed to marry).

Oh, come on, I know the spoiler tag is still new and shiny, but if you are reading this thread, you know what happens in the first episode, if not the entire first book.
Let's see what I can address now that I've slept and my face isn't frozen in a geek smile...
Nudity.
This seems one of the big things discussed lately. It is true that both scenes were unnecessary, and that Jaime & Cersei was underdone, compared to the book. But you know what? Weteros is a fucking cruel world, full of blood, gore, and sex. If a few extra tits are going to help portray it as such, then by all means I am going to watch a few extra tits - and, hell, I am going to enjoy them. This is not a book/show for kids. It's a story for mature men and women who can watch nudity without immediately reaching for their belts.
Characters' Age.
The obvious thing to say is, you can't show 14-15 year olds in sex scenes. Actually, I can't really come up with anything else to say. While inaccurate, it is much more politically correct in today's society.
Scope & Bran's Fall.
A Game of Thrones
is a ~300k words novel. Unless I misremember, the TV show will have something like 10 episodes, so roughly 4-8 chapters per episode. That's a lot of content they need to get in there, especially considering that they can't end an episode without some sort of cliffhanger - it's just not how visual media works. And Bran's fall was probably the best cliffhanger they had in the first 10 chapters. It's a climax in a way.
Accuracy.
I think every character was made to be as close to the book as possible. Ned was solemn, but loving. Robert snapped quickly between seriousness and joviality. Cersei was distant and borderline rude. Arya was playful and a complete tomboy. Sansa - a proper lady (and pretty hot for her age). Jon and Rob came out to be like real brothers, only that Jon didn't really feel he belongs - just like in the book. Jaime seemed a little older than I expected, but he was fully the casual player I expected him to be, and my female friends, fans of the series tell me they found him pretty hot. Etc, etc, etc...
Daenerys.
Only thing I have a complaint about. I don't remember her so dispassionate about everything happening around her. I know she is supposed to be afraid in her bones, and I think that's what HBO tried to convey; but it came out more like she was rendered unable to act at all. I don't make much sense, but it felt like they overdid her fear and turned it into numbness.
Overall? Easy 9/10. Possibly 10/10. It's one of those series I intend to keep for life.

I've actually sort of got to agree with Queggy on this one. I've read the books. I realize they're full of sex and violence, and that doesn't bother me in the least. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination. The entire reason that this show is on HBO at all is so that they're less restricted about what they can show... but at the same time, when the sex scenes aren't helping the storytelling, they just get sort of tiresome and distracting. They're not titillating, they're not upsetting, they just make me roll my eyes and want them to get on with the show.
Still, like I said, I'm quite happy with it. I've got high hopes for it. A few minor annoyances, but nothing that really detracts from how much I enjoy watching. Except for the whole Dany/Drogo thing. I'm still annoyed about that today.
Instead of showing that this towering, badass warrior with a habit of taking whatever he wants has a tender and almost nurturing side when it comes to his new bride, they just turn it into a quasi-rape scene where he knocks her over on hands and knees and mounts her horse style for shock value. It changes his entire character, making him much less likable and a heck of a lot more one-dimensional.

I just watched the episode, and I will, Like ArgentSun, give it a 9/10. Great show, will be following it with delight!
And since we're not doing spoilers here, I'm interested to see how they'll get on with Bran.

I'll believe it when the book actually comes out. GRRM isn't exactly known for his adherence to deadlines.
The publishers themselves said this was the release date. The book has probably already rolled off the presses at this time (or is about to). Seriously, it's for realz.

I've watched two of the episodes so far. One of them I watched with my parents, and just so happened that literally every scene but one contained sex, in the same position every time, or a mention of it, including horse sex. Which was awkward. Me and my dad agonized over what this one barbarian tribe was, until we finally figured out it was just made the hell up. Which disappointed me. In these instances, I'm more of a historian then a fantasy Geek. And dragon-eggs? There's not enough fantasy for it to be fantastical, and not enough history (or even too much fantasy) for it too be historical.
That said, it's still a great show.

I cut into the middle of each one, so maybe it was two halves of one and I didn't notice.
