Caveat : I am not a huge FF fan overall.
But I still do not get the fanboy SQUEE for VII.
I've only played IV, VII, and X. (If I remember the numbers correctly)
IV weas okay. TBH I don't remember a whole lot. Something about Blue planets and an artificial moon...(?) (I was heavy into D&D at the time, and so was more into heavier RPG titles).
VII just never hooked me. I tried it several times and could never get interested in it at all. It just seemed bland and trite.
X was fantastic. By far one of my favorite old RPGs for story, character progression, integration of cut scenes, and gameplay. Somewhat linear, to where the story moved along when you were ready, but not restrictive.
The only bad thing I have to say about X was that getting some of the epic items was just off the wall weird.
I mean, if you didn't look it up, how are you supposed to know to avoid 200 lightning strikes in a row?

Well....my brain just exploded.
Test for FFXV.

Is that a 3rd person battle system rather than an ATB system? Or is it just the fluidity of the representation of the combat mechanics?

I haven't played XIV, but it's possible that they are using that system, like how 12/13 took it from XI. No matter what, I like it!

Hype is dangerous.
Last game I was hyped for disappointing me sorely.
I agree hype can be dangerous...but so far all that's been released are the trailers and the alpha game play stuff; that happened with XIII as well, and it was just as good as promised. Also....It's Final Fantasy; say what you will, but none of the games in the main series have bombed yet.

Rise up, rise up, rise up! Since you know, 15 is finally out so it needs to be added to the poll lol.

As for why I really rezzed the thread; watching a let's play of 8, and a thought came to me about the whole Sorceress and Knight thing....Squall was Rinoa's, so that could have been something driving the romantic plot tumour. Or maybe not but with that idea at least makes it a little more bearable.
If it's been suggested by others and I'm not the smartest, oh well.
~
Also, a new Arcade Dissidia was released, and it has RAMZA! as a fighting choice :) Cannot wait for it to come out on the PS4.
~
And I am a player of FFXIV now, but didn't start till a Realm Reborn. If you are bored of WoW, you may want to try the trial, it is a great game.

That's on you - you're the one who can edit it! Not that XV is a favourite of mine, but it's not half bad. A bit too MMO-ish for my liking, though it changes the grinding dynamic.
Re: Sorceress and Knight thing - yes Squall was, effectively. Not sure what you mean by driving the romantic plot though? That they were fated to be in love because of the sorceress/knight bond?

Adamsm
I can't change it, has to be done by a Mod.
~
And I mean more that the romance makes a bit more sense there. Yes, there was build up, but it still wasn't the best to make a major impact on why they fell in love beyond it was going to happen.

Squishalot
Hm, I never realised that. I suspect I was the last one to change it way back when then!
Yes, fated, destiny, etc. etc.. But really, you need to have that belief in "well otherwise we wouldn't have a movie/game/other" fate, for pretty much any movie/game/other romance to work. "Why do all these things happen to such otherwise normal people? Because that's why we've made a game about them."
I just think it's sad that Zell and Quistis are forever single.

Yeah but I always found out of the main love stories of the first 10 FF games, the two weakest were Tidus/Yuna and Squall/Rinoa....though for Cloud it took a movie to finalize that one haha. But yeah, it can be a pain for romance writing; I think that's why I like Zidane and Dagger's from 9, since you see it actually grow and blossom over the course of the entire game, from Zidane's flirtiness and Dagger's original indifference to the final scene at the very end.
Though, at the end, Zell possibly isn't single; there is his Hotdog/Bread girl from the Garden lol. She was the one who always tried to save him his favourite food, and she was sitting right beside him in the ending when he chokes after stuffing his face. But yes, poor Quistis.

I didn't find the Squall/Rinoa romance to be weak, I thought it was pretty good. If anything, Selphie and Irvine felt VERY forced.
Also, I find this bit in your post a little funny bro':

You just described Squall and Rinoa's romance to a T :P
Rinoa was very flirty at the start, with squall being aloof and indifferent, but their relationship evolves as the game progresses, and she goes from being a pestering invasive bossy little girl to him, to someone he'd laid down his life for, and for whom he literally crossed an entire continent on foot and braved the depths of outer space to bring back to life.
Comparing how Squall acts towards Rinoa in Disk 1, to how he does in Disk 3 is quite a sight to behold, and makes for an evolving blossoming relationship that goes through several stages before Squall has his epiphany that he simply can't live without Rinoa. (Also, that hug from space is the sweetest thing I've ever seen in a videogame so far)

Eh, don't know. Could be it's the span of time for 8 compared to 9, as 9 does take place over several months while 8 seems to go through everything in the span of a month in the most. But as I was watching the scene where they start to explain about time compression, and Squall is focused entirely on Rinoa, that seemed to be a little meh to me.
But that could be because I like the over all story of 8 more then I like the love story that really bothers me, even though I know that it affects the things with Adel and Ultimicia.

So with patch 3.56 Heavensward for FFXIV is over..I liked it; it was a good expansion, had a lot of interesting things added to it and I really liked the new classes as well as the Primals and Raids. The Dungeons were kinda lackluster but that's okay I suppose. The last few patches have sure had some swerves and changes through from the end of the 2.0 story.
Best thing about 3.56 even though it's a tiny patch story wise? Perfect set up for Stormblood; we see a Samurai arrive and we find out who the girl in the trailer fighting the Player stand in was and we find out one of the Primal's we'll be fighting and it's another long game runner...but hasn't been a major thing, just an enemy. Cannot wait for June, it's going to be a blast.

So the idea that FFXIV is some sort of multi-verse hub for all of the Final Fantasy universes has another check towards it....The last Boss of the Omega raid is Exdeath from 5; like full on Exdeath, the same style of model that he was in Dissidia. Talks about the Void and everything else sadly though doesn't turn into a massive tree during the fight haha.
I know it could just be call backs, but I do love it; we've had Cloud of Darkness, the Warring Triad, Shinryu, the Omega and Ultimate Weapons, Ozma as bosses so now I'm looking forward to Griever showing up at some point, maybe even some version of Sin.
Probably there will be a cross over event when the 7 remake finally launches.
