Basically the Scourge control it, and the Dawn is leading an offensive against it.

I got that, can you get a little more specific? North, south, any other nearby scourge forces, ambushes, reinforcements, what not? If I got it right they're coming over the bridges.

Um, the Argent Dawn forces control all of the South, Stormcross and a unit of Alliance dwarves have blocked off the route from Sorrow Hill, and a number of Alliance soldiers slipped across the lake and set up camp at the North end.
Here's a map
. Red = Argent Dawn/Alliance, Purple = Scourge
Dot size is relative to the number of soldiers in each group. Larger dot = more soldiers.

Meh, I'm seeing Valiant as more of a real universe Scarlet Cruader.
Also, Alex never asked the High General about sending the troops. A point I meant to address but must have missed. He tried to control Tyr's hand to impress Abbendis while she was handling the rear guard.
