OK, I'm on the down side of being lucky, but after way too long, here's my path that lead me to the recipe:
5 Rare Tol'vir artifacts - Crawling Hand Pet, Ultramarine Battle Tank mount, Scimitar of the Sirocco, Ring of the Boy Emperor, and Pendant of the Scarab Storm.
Common Artifacts - 17 Cat Statues
- 21 Soapstone Necklaces
- 28 Tiny Oasis Mosaics
- 20 Scimitar Hilts
- 17 Castles of Sand
- 29 Sketches of the palace
- 28 Canopic Jars
If I never solve another NE artifact to get digsites in Uldum, it will be too soon.
I'm not sure from this if you got the recipe in 28 jars or are still looking. Could you clarify?

I have successfuly found the recipe in my first canopic jar solved, on 4th April. Screenshot shows the Canopic Jar was solved only once and the Vial recipe in my alchemy window:

Alch 525 / Arch 525
Total solves: 609
Total Tol'vir : 104
Canopic Jar: 15
With recipe in hand, do I want to spend 28k?
Applause to those with the 1 jar - 1 recipe, but for those with my luck and close to insanity, dig-on.

I just got the Vial pattern out of my first jar, 3rd Tol'vir artifact.
#1: Cat Statue with Emerald Eyes
#2: Castle of Sand
#3: Canopic Jar
Inside jar I got some guts and the pattern.
My alchemist is now, having just gotten the pattern, 495 in Archaeology, level 85, max alchemist.

23rd open. No Drop. *cry*
My tale of woe is the same. Have all but
Staff of Ammunae
rare Tol'vir artifacts and after my 21st jar I've called it for the moment.

im adding a few speculations, in hope to give my contribution to the matter :)
according to wowhead

. , the canopic jar has been opened 15793 times so far, and 429 lucky alchemists looted the recipe. now the matter is, how many among those 15793 were alchemists? Lets say there were x; then the drop rate for alchemists would be 429/x. Now, apart from people who decided to level archeology on their alchemist alt just for the recipe, usually only the main character has got archeology skilled up. We can therefore assume that main professions were evenly divided among people who looted the canopic jar. What is then the probability for one of them to be an alchemist? Professions are 11, but stating that the probability is 15793/11 is uncorrect in my opinion. Usually the main character is the first character people made when they started playing, so the choice for professions is usually ruled by coupling:
mining with JC
mining with BS
mining with engineering
herb with inscriptionism
herb with ALCHEMY
skinning with LW
many people simply took 2 gathering professions
now things gets harder.. many people coupled tailoring and enchanting, many other did not and simply took one of them with a gathering profession to get money from the AH
summing up, we have from 8 to 10 profession groups, so the value for x can be 15793/8=1974.13, 15793/9=1754.78 or 15793/10=1579.3. Now we can calculate the drop chance for alchemists as 429/x, whose value is (in the 3 cases)
21.7%, 24.4%
and
27.2%
of course i have made a lot of assumptions, and moreover some professions were taken into game later (like JC and inscriptionism) so people who have been playing since TBC dont usually have them on their main character; in the end my calculations do not claim to be true, but at least they can give some hint :)

I'm on jar 9 and still no recipe. I know someone that got it at 5 jars and someone else is at jar 12. Almost done all the archeology achievements. Think that will happen before I get the recipe. lol
