I haven't seen this yet, so I hope I'm not repeating. But does anyone know if the recipe procs on solving the jar, or on opening of the jar?
There are reports that people saved jars, learned alchemy, then opened jars and received the recipe. Personally, to be on the safe side I would level alchemy before making any jars.

I would assume it procs upon actually making the jar.
See above for why. (Still, just pick up Alchemy anyways. The profession is awesome).

The next artifact was Scepter of Azj'Aqir , which used up pretty much all of my saved up fragments.
You lucky bastard. =D

C0h3n, what do you think the chances are that this thread is weighted towards (or against) successful looters? I see a possibility that more people find this thread after looting their recipe than un-successful people who are still trying or just not encountered it yet.
Also, and this is entirely subjective, ever since they raised the number of tol'vir sites it seems to me that the chance for canopic jar to come up has reduced drastically. I had 11 jars in the first 45 tol'vir recipes. I've increased that to 95 tol'vir solves now, but my jar count has gone up only to 14. (and I went 2 weeks of only doing archaeology where it didn't come up at all.)
I would say that there could be a sampling bias in that people are more likely to post their successful finds than if they have not found it. That said, short of the wowhead client somehow using a smart loot feature where it only counts eligible loots, this is probably our best way to estimate the true drop rate.
I doubt the proc chance on the jar went down, you are probably just having bad jar RNG. 11/45 to begin is very good as it is one of seven commons. As you have an infinite sample you would expect then 1 in 7 projects would be jars. You had nearly 1 in 4 projects being jars in your first 45 solves. From there on, you had 3/50, a little bit better than 1 in 17. However, overall, you have 14 in 95, which is very perfectly compatible with a flat 1 in 7 chance. (In fact, 1/7 times 95 is 13.6, rounded up to 14 expected jars.)
There is always the chance that Blizzard will change around some rate that may affect these numbers, however, but what can you do? Short of them telling us they are doing it we just assume they haven't messed with it.

i had made 18 greys and 2 rares. 2 of the greys were jars, I saved up 200 fragments and used them all at the same time. Made 3 jars in a row before i ran out of fragments. later on i made 2 more jars for a total of 5 in a row. In the second jar i found the recipe. That means i actually got it out of the fourth jar i made. The 24th tolvir item i created.
