I'm a very hardcore mount collector that just recently started camping Aeonaxx. I'm getting that "lost in time" sensation all over again, if you get my drift. It's only been a few days, and I have yet to camp him immediately after a server reset. While now I'm my fourth day of straight camping, stopping only to sleep and run an important errand or two, and going on one raid, I've been spending my camping time learning about this rare monster. I've been telling myself that I will not camp it for more than a few weeks. I don't think I could go into the "four or five month" range without feeling like my life is slowly slipping away from me.
So based on information that I've gathered, I've learned a lot about it.
First of all, there is apparently a huge speculation that he will spawn no less than six hours after he or Blood Seeker has spawned, kind of like Time-Lost and Vyragosa. I've heard other people say four hours, so I'm not sure which is true. After six (or four) hours, there will again be a chance that he or Blood Seeker will spawn. Since this is only a "chance" it could take several hours more before one of them spawn. I've heard it could literally take days. When Blood Seeker spawns, he's there to tell you "okay, you can take a break, go do something else, you freak." In the full three days camping Aeonaxx, I've never seen Blood Seeker. Apparently, Blood Seeker will DESPAWN after 15 seconds, but I've heard it's up to five minutes or so. The visual range of Blood Seeker is very small, therefore your _NPCscan will not pick him up unless you're in range of him. He could spawn on the opposite end of your camp, and you wouldn't know. This makes things a lot harder on campers, especially since he despawns very quickly. You won't know when you get your break time unless you're there on top of him or right in front of him.
With this knowledge, it becomes clear that the best strategy of camping Aeonaxx is to NOT park on one camp spot the entire time. Since both Blood Seeker and Aeonaxx can spawn out of your range on the other side of the temple, you have to make routine flights around it, probably every few minutes or so. After making your rounds, come back to your camp spot for a few minutes, then fly around again. You don't want to miss out on a spawn on the other side of the Temple of Earth.
Camp spots vary in their quality of catching Aeonaxx when he arrives, but it's best to camp somewhere where you have up to three spawn points in your visual range. Right now I'm facing Stonecore with the Stonecore spawn point in front of me in Jagged Wastes. Quartizite Basin is to my left and the other Jagged Wastes spawn point is to my right. I have three spawns covered this way. Most of the time, when camping, no one else is here, so I have no camp competition. It's just me, and Deepholm, and the occasional herb that I pick.
Even with this knowledge, you still need luck on your side, and probably be on a low-pop server, like mine. If you're someone who has camped for several months with no sight of Aeonaxx, I would begin to believe there are other factors involved. One of those factors I've heard could be an issue with "phasing," which I don't know whether or not they have fixed by now. I've heard two different things: Aeonaxx will spawn despite your phase in Deepholm, and every player will be able to see him, and even though you can not see the other players in another phase, you WILL be able to see them once they steal Aeonaxx from you. That's one theory. Another is that there is no "phasing" outside of the Temple of Earth at all, despite the quests you've completed, and it's something people brought up when they hadn't seen Aeonaxx for weeks. I myself have "Deep into Deepholm" and I plan to tell how long it took me to find Aeonaxx whenever I do (IF I do).
Again, you need to be lucky. I camped Time-Lost for a very long time. I don't even remember how long. I didn't even get him, a friend did, a friend who was kind enough to let me have him knowing how much time I've wasted camping him. With Aeonaxx, this can't be done. You have to be the one to kill him. The reason for that is, even if you're in a party with someone, and they kill Aeonaxx, and you're too far away from him when he dies, you won't be able to roll or trade loot. You have to kill him, or be right in range when he dies, and this is very difficult due to the speed Aeonaxx flies at. Even with Master riding, you will not catch up. So you have to be the one to get lucky enough to mount him and kill him. Someone could spot Aeonaxx and let you know he's up, though, if they're nice enough. Hopefully you have some Potions of Deepholm on you like I do.
The Reins of the Phosphorescent Stone Drake would be my 126th mount.
I have barely touched Cataclysm mounts since returning to the game a few weeks ago. I've gotten the Grey Riding Camel already, and since I've decided to start camping this dragon, I have been neglecting my Firelands dailies as well as my Tol'Barad ones, but I felt that if I already spent all of this time camping Aeonaxx, I should continue to do so. Those of you who spend months waiting for him know exactly what that feels like. They call that "Chasing a loss," an interesting fallacy in human thinking, where people feel that they can't give up something they've already invested so much in. It's hard to give up. It's very, very hard.
But I'm just getting started.

Eh-hem.... so... I logged on this morning to have WoW on in the background while I made some lunch for my boyfriend to take to work with him. I've always heard these stories about _NPCscan going off when someone logs on just to check for him, and I always thought "those lucky bastards, that would never happen for me."
_NPCscan went off, showing Aeonaxx's portrait. He was to the right of my camp spot. If I hadn't been camping where I was, I wouldn't have been able to see him, which is a huge indication that you should never camp on top of only one spawn point, like Quartzite Basin. One thing to note is that despite the immense visual range, you might not actually see Aeonaxx until you fly up to him, even though your _NPCscan picks up him farther than your eye can see. So keep clicking his portrait and fly as fast as you can.
The fight is very, very easy if you're level 85, especially if you cast or do huge damage. I didn't take any damage during the fight. I have mostly 359 gear.
The kill was on the realm Coilfang at around 5 a.m. server time. I was too busy having a heart attack to note the exact time.
To everyone else, keep on camping, but don't go "chasing a loss." If you feel like your camping is wasting your time, then it probably is. If you're camping all day, every day like me, don't forget sleep and other activities, and keep it up for at least a couple weeks, but don't go camping him for months. That's nuts.
Most of all, enjoy yourselves. I'm going back to doing my dailies and trying to increase my mount count even further. Good luck campers!
One other note:
I've made a video of the kill as well as some other camping info that I'll be posting on Youtube to help other campers, and to give them a little teasing eye-candy to watch while they wait for him :)

After farming Aeonaxx for about two weeks at different times of the day, I finally got him. I am on the Borean Tundra US Alliance server, and he spawned at 4:30 AM server time today at the SW spawning point, right over the ring of quartzite crystals. I jumped on him and it took about 3 minutes or so to take him down. I am a level 85 blood DK, and my health bar never moved during the fight. I just went through my normal rotation of diseases, death strike, rune strike, and heart strike until I got him down. I threw in a blood boil every now and then for the whelps, but they really didn't do much. One tip...after mounting him, make sure to click on him before you attack. That might be why some people have said they couldn't attack him after jumping on his back. Anyway, the Phosphorescent Stone Drake is a beautiful mount, and I am excited to finally add it to my collection! Oh...and the mount I used to farm him with was the Time-Lost Proto Drake. Kind of appropriate, I think! Happy hunting!

After 5 months of wanting it, even 5 days of 24/7 camping... I finally took Aeonaxx down! I was just getting food and I told my friend to open WoW so I can go play with my newcomer friend. I told her to make a round, and next thing I hear, is her screaming and running at me with the laptop. I started to tremble as I targeted Aeonaxx. It was circling around a pillar at the North East spot. I was panicking cuz I didn't see it anywhere. Problem was; I was bit too low. But I found Aeonaxx and downed it in around 3 minutes!
Server: Aszune EU
Time: 00:16am (Server time)
Spawn point: NE
Mount is incredibly beautiful.... I love it to bits! Good luck with camping for Naxxie!

Finally got Aeonaxx on my hunter, I'd been camping for 17 hours each day for WEEKS since January and missed him about 10 times between the times I was looking for him- whether it was because I was asleep, or because someone just plain beat me to him- I lost.
Finally, at 2:14 am Daggerspine server time, I found him, just by checking up on him......BOOM there he was, near the crystals in Quartzite basin. I've seen him spawn there twice before, so this seems to be the most popular spawn spot for him.
I have the vitreous stone drake, but I do not ride that anymore because my phosphorescent means so much to me.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

i'm camping hard since december 20th, i dunno how many hours i've spent here, but i'm doing no heroics, no raid, nothing. i'm almost always logged, working by day and sleeping not very much by night.
i've seen aeonaxx spawning 2 times, lost spawns other 4 times, see the bat 4 times. i think this rare is quite random, half the players who got it have found the drake doing something else. only one was camping since a week or so. i've passed the month.
i'm a little bored. and the point is: why blizzard creates things like this one? i'm looking at myself from a new angle, and this angle is quite sad. i'm not the only one camping aeonaxx so hard, hundreds are doing this crazy thing around the world. and it's bad for many people, who maybe are no more 'playing' the game, but just waiting. tlpd required only 1 or 2 days, we did know cd, spawn points, routes. aeonaxx isnt just harder to catch, it'a a time wasting thing.
i work, i have a girlfriend, a dog. things that keep me in the real world. and i know this is just a game. but it costs, and one month fee was trashed looking at the temple of earth. not playing the game. i'm starting to worry about students, or people with a lot of free time, or no job. this is not entertaining. at all.
That's why you Window screen wow.. minimize it to a small screen and do something else like play other games.. watch Netflix.. check emails etc.. and since there are addons like Silver Dragon and NPC scan.. I was able to be away from the computer so I could do chores and cook dinner or let my bf on the computer so he could play another game.
You can sit there or fly around being bored out of your mind.. or you can let luck and NPC Scan do it's job while you do other.. healthier things.
TO ANYONE camping long hrs.. do what I do.. widow screen wow so you don't feel like Aeonaxx's Zombie

Draenor (US)
9:30am server.
Figured I'd post that first since it's all anyone really cares about. But here's my story.
I logged on and was in Deepholm where I'd decided to plant myself. I'd already gotten TLPD and Poseidus' mount, so I decided to sit my butt in Deepholm and hope for the best.
I queued up for a random by accident when I meant to simply do Direbrew, ran the ZA I entered to be nice to the group and not ditch it, and then requeue for Direbrew.
When I got out, I unhappily retrieved the tokens from my keg, and then BAM! NPCScan blares out of my speakers and shows Aeonaxx had gotten near me or spawned on me. I looked around frantically cause I wasn't at his level. He was just behind me and about to fly over my head. I turned around fast and mounted him. Since the adds didn't do much damage to me at all, I simply focused all my damage into him. I have no idea how long it took since he's an 85 with a good amount of health, but I got him down just in time to see an alliance mage come by and probably unwillingly /cheer at me. It feels so good to finally have one of my favorite, most wanted mounts.
Cheers and good luck to all who are still searching! <3

Day 2 of my camp on my 85 druid (and my first proper attempt at camping for naxxy), I'm trying to remain patient since I've only clocked up about 12 hours through the night and today... so i guess i can't complain yet! Got a bit fright about 5 hours ago when NPCscan popped but it was only Xariona >.<
as far as i can tell there are no other campers, so hopefully if the big guy does spawn i'll get lucky~!
i've read through the entirety of this thread and found it very helpful (i am trying to fly between spawn points as has been suggested instead of just camping one spot, and have wow in windowed mode so that i can entertain myself otherwise), so feel well prepared for my long camp! however can someone clarify for me what the reins linking thing is about? i attempted it earlier and the reins are linkable but is this just speculation ? someone mentioned this no longer applies since patch 4.2, is this true? thanks in advance and happy camping guys!
also .... i took my laptop with me whilst i had a bath earlier lol so that i could watch just in case npcscan popped! xD paranoia lol

Killed him on EU Thunderhorn at 2:00 am.
Not camping for him, just trying to raise my Therazane rep and suddenly NPCscans goes off. My heart starts racing as I see it's him. I click, he is alive, I board him, down him and brag in Stormwind.
Good luck to you all.

Killed it today on Dentarg EU, around 15:25 ST.
It spawned just outside the temple where I was afk on my alt, so I stressed to log out and log on my main, extremely easy for a firelands geared Shadowpriest. Good luck getting yours :)
