Yes; if you like the game, sing it loud, sing it proud, and screw the idiots.

About 11yrs ago when I was in 9th grade I generally did not tell anyone I played everquest, using a computer in general was still pretty nerdy, god only knows what crap I wouldve caught with my football and wrestling teammates lol. But now a days no I do not care and will tell anyone that asks me what kinda games I play.

I have no problem saying it to friends now family on the other hand i tend not to. Its more work explaining to them what you do in the game especially when they ask a ton of questions.

I don't find it coming up in every day conversation all that often to be perfectly honest. The friends that are fellow gamers know that I play, and I've never gotten any grief over it. Of course most of those either play or used to play (or play a different flavor MMO and at least understand the appeal). The non-gamer friends? They know that I play games in general, but they don't care which. Games are games.
I've actually gotten overwhelmingly positive reactions from random strangers that find out that I play, (like when I've bought expansions or trading cards). It's usually along the lines of, "Oh, you play! Me too! What server? What do you play?" etc.

Do you tell people you don't? ;)
I like the fact that I am a massive nerd, and yet played soccer in college, etc. so, i love telling people I play, especially when it throws them off guard, because they would not have assumed that about me. Basically, im proud to be a nerd, and off the nerd factor associated with playing wow.
This, this, a million times this.

I sometimes make a few extra cash by doing some modeling. Now, there is a community that looks at you like you have a disease when you tell them you play WoW. But I do, very loudly and proudly, when people ask me about what I do in my spare time.
When I do run in to the odd light-man or photografer who plays aswell, they instantly think that I play a lvl 40 something hunter, who runs around hugging critters and collecting pretty hats. When I tell them I raid endgame content, and on a pretty hardcore level aswell, it completly throws them.
I
love
it!
To be honest, I don't have many friends that aren't gamers... Those I have who aren't, they love me for who I am, not for what I do with my sparetime at home.
However, my best friend.. She has some issues. We worked out a system. Whenever she asks me what I'm doing it get's translated into "I'm at the gym". Then she knows. :D Like when I jused to play live RP, I was not out swinging my latex sword, I was "at the puplic swimmingpool". She got uncomfortable, don't know why, and don't care, but we worked around it. :D

I tell people if they ask....As a 31 year old mum of two I get some funny looks but thats about it really...I think my gaming causes my 13 year old daughter more embarrasment than it does me...
My gaming isnt limited to WoW although thats where I spend most of my time, I also play SC2 and Portal ( working my way through the 'cheevies). You cant help what you enjoy, so why should you be ashamed of it...
To be honest your kids will be embarrassed whatever you do. It's the way of the world.
If people ask me, I tell them. I think some of my friends who have known me for a long time may raise eyebrows, thinking 'this guy was playing games when he was 12, why is he still doing it at 25'. But I suppose I can ask them the same thing in regards to a real job.
It's what I do to relax and enjoy myself. What business is it of anybody else to tell me not to do it? I could understand if it was like, unhealthy or illegal or an addiction. But it's not. :)

I know that I like to be honest with people I meet and when I say that I cant go out on Friday and Sunday nights and they want to know why, I tell them I gotta raid. No one ever gets it.
Pretty obvious reaction when viewed from
their
perspective, don't you think? Even though I understand the social aspects about online games and the concept of raiding, it still feels kind of bad to get turned down in favor of "some guys on the internet". Imagine how people who don't have a clue about it - who still think that playing WoW is basically the same thing as playing Mario Bros. or Pacman - might feel.
That's why I don't tell people, "Sorry, but no. I have a raid tonight." I rather go with a, "you know, I don't feel so good, I guess I'm going to stay at home." It's not being dishonest, it's just avoiding to hurt their feelings.

I tell people this: I play, my wife plays, my brother plays, my brother in law plays, and my brotha from anutha motha plays.
But I also am in the Air Force and while some of us are jocks many of us play an MMO or hardcore xbox/ps3

I'm already hardcore nerd status. I've always been thin, pale, and smart (for my age, not wise). I'm in college 2 years early now. I just keep WoW on my dock (OSX), and people find out. So far I've only gotten, "Oh, cool", "I was thinking about playing", or "Wut?" I wear a Horde crest shirt, no problem. If someone asks, I say, 'yeah, I play.' It's not a huge deal.

First, I am sorry you have to feel that way. No one should be ashamed for what they like to do.
Second, people are always shocked that I play WOW. Mostly because I used to play college football and still work out on a daily basis. I also love watching and playing sports and I guess look like a typical jock. But I love playing WOW and most role playing games. I also love sci-fi and fantasy movies and books. Hey, that's what I like and I am not ashamed to tell people that. I they don't like it, well, screw them. Find yourself some real friends and enjoy life!

I will not forget the time that I was at a function with a colleague with a wide variety of age groups. We were talking about WOW and one of the younger people (and by younger I mean mid to late 20's) looked at us and asked "What are you talking about?" We said WOW and he then said "I would not put you 2 into the WOW demographics."
This was based in the idea from him on our appearence, My avatar is me and if my colleague grew his beard he would match me. We are in our 50's.
All this is to say that yes, I do tell people about playing WOW and have had many good conversations with various other players.
