I think the other users you've seen using them in comments, the forum or user pages are Wowhead staff (volunteer or full staff). Regular users can't use those BBCodes.

Concerning the maps code:
center
Do this on Twilight Highlands
center
and it won't work. Take out the pin and the map will load fine. Twilight Highlands is phased and it's not loading the "Original" as the default phase so the map is black with no loaded pins as a result. I think this is a bug. Would be nice to add a phase option to the BBcode:
center

Something I've noticed with maps is that they really don't like the preview view. Whenever I use maps I find that they'll show briefly but as soon as a use the closing tag they disappear from the preview. So, firstly I just wanted to check if you still have your issue after hitting submit?
Secondly, Neutronimity made
this cool post
in the guides feedback thread regarding maps. This covers phases and floors and might help you with your issue.
Give it a read and let me know if neither of those solves your problem.

Is there any way to display a PNG picture (a.k.a. a picture with transparency) without the borders/background?
Basically, I am using a PNG on top of my guide
here
. What you see as the dark background is not actually in the PNG image (you can tell because when you check the image
like this
, the background will be the color of your browser, white in my case). Anyway, I'd like to get rid of the border around the picture and the black background, so it would just naturally sit there. Is it possible?

Neutronimity made this cool post in the guides feedback thread regarding maps.
Epic! That did the trick! Would love to see that info added into the main post on this thread for reference... or at least linked.
Oddly enough loaded the pins, but still not the map. Once I dropped in I got the map too.
I've yet to have any problems with the preview view and maps being any different than the actual view. That's on the latest version of Firefox though... the Javascript could be handled differently in another browser.
Thror:
I tested it on my guide and it worked like a champ :
Check your code and if it's still not working, maybe check and see if you put the img inside a div and floated the div to the right... the div may have the background color you're seeing, but clearly don't want.

Yup, border=0 takes away that grey "Wowhead-y" border and takes away the black background for transparencies.
I use exactly that in my
simcraft
guide.

It just needs the \ tag closing after you finished with your table. The basics on tables are all
here

Aye. Any BBCode tag will need the corresponding closing tag.

Not quite all (\ etc.)

Well, any BBCode tag affecting the text. Since \ merely produces a line
and \ produces a line break
I'd say that they don't need closing tags, but tables and things like \ do.

But, yes, you're right of course.

Hi,
How can I get color for my text in a Tab for a guide?
I want a Tab heading of "Death Knight" in the DK color. I've tried putting color around it, with no luck so far.
Cheers.
