Everybody can get a GS of 5k+ through simple badge gear and drops from the icc 5mans. Stop being lazy and do some preparation.
Sorry, but no. My mage has a GS of 4.9k with the following:
2p T10, 2p T9, Quel'Delar, 2x 251 rings, 245 crafted bracers, 245 Triumph ranged, 232 chest from Ick, 226 crafted feet, 2x 226 from Uld, 2x 219 from Uld, 200 abyssal rune, 200 crafted deathchill cloak.
Yes, I could easily get over 5k if I bought the Triumph tinket to replace my Abyssal Rune, but the Rune is much better until I can get some 251/264 trinkets.
I do 5-6k dps and have been rejected from VOA 25 and ICC 10. However, I don't pug much and usually go with guilds or people who know me.

Yea.. GS has really kinda ruined the game in a sense. Don't get me wrong, it helps me know who I should most likely put vigilance on 7/10 times, but it gets out of hand a lot.
It's been ruined for quite some time then, because pug groups looking for ROFLSTOMPERS isn't exactly new. Before wotlk people refused to do regular heroic instances unless people were all decked out in kara purple, and you wouldn't get a spot in kara unless you were sporting gear from SSC. Nowadays everyone is wearing purple T9 so the GS addon really help to set the bar unrealistically high..
When wotlk was launched we used to run instances with a tank with 25k life, a healer with 1500sp and 10k mana and the dps'ers doing ~1200 dps each. Today people start panicking if the tank has less than 50k life and the dps aren't doing at least 5k dps each, not to mention the healer is sitting pretty at 3000sp and 22-25k mana..
I don't have the GS addon, in fact I have no clue what my GS is, but I really like the addon anyway as it's a great way to spot those idiots that puts way to much value into a number.

The thing is people's wants and expectations change along with gear upgrades released. The standard now is: Can we mindlessly lollerskates our way through this with no strategy and simply burn everything down in 10 minutes and collect our loot. You may be more than well enough geared to run the place with a group that's willing to use a smidgen of brainpower but maybe are perceived as not having enough fire power for the tank and spank nuclear assault groups want now. This is pretty much the mentality that random heroics and easy gear has bred, and it's also a reason why an otherwise easy instance like
The Oculus
is so hated; because no matter how highly geared a group is, they can't just spam the same rotations they use in every other dungeon.

There is also one place where GS is an good thing to have, and that would be the beginning of Ulduar with the Flame Leviathan. The higher the GS, the more HP your engine has.
I can remember the first time I drove a siege engine, it had maybe 1.9 million HP. About a month ago after I had acquired better gear, that number was around 2.2+.
Also don't forget that your drake in Occulus, if I'm not mistaken scales up with your gear (I think it's that way in EoE as well, can't remember.) The better the GS the more HP you have.
I'm not advocating that would should be looking for 6k+ GS, just saying that there are places where it is of benefit. Beyond that, I do agree that the spamming of 'lf a 5k+ GS for ToC' or something like is is is getting a little out of hand.

That's a very apt metaphor, actually. A stand-up comedian I once heard said something along the lines of, "They call it the WonderBra because when you take it off, they wonder where your %^&* went."
GS is sort of the same way. When you run across someone who has an amazing gear score and you invite them, and then find out that despite having uber-gear they still can't tank/heal/DPS worth crap, then you've basically shot yourself in the foot.
gearscore breaker.

if you don't like gearscore, then break it.
The more of us who do this the faster GS will die
Nice! I'll have to download that when I get home.

Since the GS addon became popular, forums have become unreadable for all of the QQ about how its terrible/necessary/awesome/whatever, and Trade Chat is constantly spammed with idiots asking for gearscores, including people too lazy to even check it themselves, they want you to whisper it to them.
Look: I'm in a guild, the only gearscore I bother with is from wow-heroes, and the very idea that you'd ask an Arcane mage in Tier 10 whether he's got the gear to run fricking FLAME LEVIATHAN with you is goddamn insulting. But hey, fine, it's your pug. I still shouldn't have my trade chat polluted with you and your retard peers finding new and exciting ways to slap together fail pugs for old content that you obviously outgear.
TL;DNR: I want to find the man who made this add-on and stab him in the balls with a rusty corkscrew.

if ur under 5k just replace some of your low item level items with pvp gear to get yourself above 5k then once ur in put your pve stuff back on.
requiring anything above 4k for voa 10/25 is just stupid, i ran voa 25 my first day at 80 in quest blues and greens and nobody said anything.

Sure, everyone was doing that a year ago when Archavon was the only one in there. But if you get together a group like that for Toravon, it isn't going to happen. One person won't hurt the raid. But in a PUG setting, noone wants to carry you.
The mentality of a PUG group is that they don't know you, so they don't know how skilled you are. If they see a low GearScore number, it signals to them that you're either a new player, or an alt of someone who hasn't put much effort into their gear through Heroics.
Sure, someone above 4k GS is decent. But someone below 2k isn't going to cut it, and should either find a guild willing to help them or start grinding some heroics.

Heh, I always out DPS people with like 5.5 - .8 GS. in an ICC 25 PuG; I always came in the top 5 of DPS despite having like a 5.2K GS. Not only that, but I was never the one that died on the adds on Saurfang. Shortly after 3 wipes, the group disbanded leaving me with no new gear to do even better, and having to rely on a competent raid leader the next time I decided I wanted to PuG. Atleast I got a new belt with the Emblems.
And, I
was
in one of the top guilds on my server, so I do have a lot of experience and am more raid aware than most other people. But does GS take that into account? Nope.
