Or if you knew how to make gold quickly instead of grinding like a drone.
I don't know about you, but I don't play this game to grind coin, either by dailies, mats farming, or AH day-trading. This isn't a substitute for my real life. I can spare maybe a couple hours a day (3 or 4 on a Saturday), and not every day. I play a fantasy MMO for a little escapist recreation. It shouldn't be so difficult to access fun things like lore-driven questlines that people like me can't manage it.

Grinding gold takes less time than farming the hilt, if you do it right. Saying that it takes too long to do when you've picked an even more time consuming method doesn't make a lot of sense.
And let's go back to my earlier point which no one noticed: If the OP loves questing, he probably has the breadwinner achievement. Since he doesn't like raiding, the money sinks there probably don't apply. No 800 gold enchants, no piles of epic gems, no flasks, no repairs. That 10,000 gold from quest rewards shouldn't be going anywhere fast and that's almost all of what you need to buy the hilt. I can't even comprehend how someone can be so wasteful with their gold despite having nothing to spend it on that it isn't faster to buy the hilt than it is to farm it.

LordBalrog: "Help! HELP! I'm stuck in a well!"
Wowheaders1-4: "Climb! Climb up and take our hands!"
LordBalrog: "I'm thinking I should dig... should I dig?"
Wowheader5: "NO! I was trapped in a well, and digging is a bad idea! Climb out!"
Wowheaders6-8: "We're lowering ropes! Take hold of a rope!"
Wowheader9: "I've even tied a harness to the end of this one!"
LordBalrog: "I can feel the ropes, but I don't want to hold onto them... should I dig?"
Wowheader10: "No! If you dig, you'll hit water, and then you'll be proper hosed. I should know, I almost drowned."
LordBalrog: "I dug a little bit just now, and I haven't hit water. I'm gonna keep digging..."
Wowheaders11-18: "No! Climb! Climb out!"
LordBalrog: "Guys, I'm seriously stuck in this well! Help! HELP!"
Wowheader19: "I was trapped in a well once. It took me two years, but I managed to build a climbing machine that pulled me to safety out of a well bucket and a pocket watch. I'm dropping the blueprints, extra buckets, and an assortment of pocket watches."
Wowheader20: "I've engineered a jet-pack that will rocket you to safety. Stay where you are and we'll lower it down!""
LordBalrog: "Thanks for your help, guys. I'm gonna keep digging. I'll find the Mines of Moria and I'll just walk to the surface."
**Wowheaders1-20 #$%^ in the well**
Wowheader21: "Guys, seriously... stop peeing in the well."
Regardless of my stance on this argument, that made me giggle.

Average price is at AH is 9800g. In all the hours you spent grinding for a 1/5 chance of it, you could have bought it by now.
That depends on the server...
Khadgar, for example, my server, it sells for 12k minimum.
Now if you just want to do the quest, is a quest chain really worth 12k? IMO, no, and I do like doing the quests.
Here's my problem with the sword.
I saw it drop 3 times. I won it on the 3rd try. And this was within 2 weeks I saw the 3 drops (2 in one night.) I did the chain. 2 weeks later in ICC 10 I got an upgrade for it because the sword from Marrowgar went to offspec. So would paying 12k for a sword, that you can replace pretty easily, really be worth it? Nope. Sure, if you're not a raider you may want the sword. But if you don't raid, then you just want the achieve, and don't care about gear to a certain point.
People gouge the snot out of the price of that sword, and it's stupid. Sure you get people willing to pay it, but it's really not worth more then say...500 gold, because it's easily replaceable, 500 gold is easily replaceable, and you get the achieve. You shouldn't haveta pay X k gold to get an achieve.
So either up the drop rate to nerf the price gouging, or up the ilvl of the sword to make it WORTH as much as people are selling it for.
And don't compare this to the chopper...The bais mats from the goblin at K3 are a few k gold itself, so I understand the amount they go for.

The hilt just like MOST wanted rare drops is a mess when you are talking blizzard.
Just round numbers for example.
the drop rate off 20 mobs in ICC 5 mans is 1%. Then bliz lets it drop like mad for about a week.
Then its nerfed first to .1% then only from 10 mobs. Making the drop rate even lower.
IF you let one person have a chance at 1% let us all have that same chance.
Not with buzzard, its like we drop a few to get them looking and then watch them spend weeks trying to farm it more money for us LOL

No difference between the Hilt drop and the Blue Proto-Drake, the Green-drake from the egg, the Polar Bear from the Hyldnir dailies(been working on that one for almost 6 months now), or any of the other rare mounts/items/pets what have that exist in the game.
Seriously, there is better things out there, keep gearing yourself and eventually you'll solo regular PoS for the best bet from farming the instance. Till then... keep smiling and realize it's part of the RNG.

I play games to have fun, not to feel accomplished.
I don't see how those two are separate.
