So the Socket 478/AGP system that I built my wife nearly 7 years ago finally bit it. We have replaced the MB a couple years ago and went through 3 video card upgrades but it is either the MB or the CPU this time. Regardless of what it is, it is time to bring her into the PCI-e world with a system that has a bit more longevity.
Things are a little tight right now so we decided to charge most of it on our Best Buy CC so our options were a bit more limited but after a little research I went with the following:
Motherboard: Asus P5P43TD (Socket 775 with DDR3 - a bit unusual I know)
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 10666 DDR3
Processor: Pentium E6300
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit or Professional 64bit OEM (haven't decided)
When it comes to video cards I am usually an nVidia fan and have been for years since way back when I had to upgrade my card for Everquest when Shadows of Luclin was released. ATI cards seemed to have problems with getting the drivers updated in a timely fashion and I had problems with getting them to work so I swore off of them.
Now though, as big of a fan as I am of BFG Tech for video cards (incredible customer service and honors a Lifetime Warranty), from some research I have done it seems like maybe for the midrange cards, nVidia is kind of treading water. Other than some minor changes and the addition of things like the PhysX engine it doesn't seem like they are really advancing much right now. ATI (AMD) does seem to be doing so and I am thinking about it. GDDR5 & DX11 beat the PhysX engine IMHO and I am considering trying them again.
I hear some bad things about heat output though on them and am still concerned about driver issues.
Any thoughts? At the pricepoint I am looking at I am looking at probably either XFX's 1GB 5770 or if I DO go with nVidia it would likely be with BFG's 1GB GTS250.
Thanks a bunch!
