Hi
I have a question.. for all you good, intelligent mages out there
I have 3 "abilities" with long CD's that I use in every fight.
Arcane Power 1.4 min CD
Talisman of Resurgence 2 min CD
Icy Veins 2.4 min CD
At the moment I have them macro'd to use all of them together.. obviously this means that AP and ToR are waiting for IV if I am in a boss fight that lasts longer than a couple of minutes..is it better to use each one as they come up or does the benefit of the combine power outweigh this?

Assuming arcane spec, I like to use Arcane Blast x3, Talisman, Icy Veins, Presence of Mind, Arcane Blast, Arcane Power, then spam Arcane Blast. The idea here is to get the AB stack up before you punch in the extra power. With buffs, you should be hitting well over 20K on every crit, while it lasts.
In my spec, I have Cold Snap also, so if the boss is still alive and I run out of mana, then I hit Mana Gem, Evocate, Cold Snap, Icy Veins again, and spam Arcane Blast. If the boss is still alive after this, then I only hope he is nearly dead. Otherwise I'm out of mana and no options left really. Don't use a spec like this for a raid, I only use it in 5-man heroics.

Thats spec isnt even usefull in 5mans tbh.
Been a while since i did any 5-mans on my mage but the boss dies in 20 seconds. Cept for the new 5-mans the points u have to use in frost tree to get cold snap are useless.
I have all CD's seperate on my bar, and on my first CD i've macro'd all CD's together when i RIGHT Click it.
After that i use AP when its off cd, And by the time IV is off cd AP should be 40 sec's left and i wait for AP to be off cd and use them in a BL and by than Mirror image are also off cd.
Unless its fights like festergut as thats a short fight.
It helps to know when Hero will be popped during a fight.
Should be know in guild raids.
So i use MI + IV 2x and AP 3 times during a normal fight.

Thank you - I have now adopted a similar setup and will see how it affects my dps over the coming weeks.

How would you even know if it's useful or not? You've never tried it! I don't know what kind of PUG's you end up with but I've
never
been in one that killed a boss in 20 seconds. The fastest kill for me so far is about 30 seconds with most fights being 45-90 seconds. Longer for Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, etc. Maybe If I got incredibly lucky and got a group where everyone had a high gear score my spec would be useless, but my spec has worked great for 5-mans so far.

My DBM boss kill time records are in the teens for almost all 5-man bosses that don't have a DPS-blocking mechanic.

That's cool, but that isn't relevant to someone that is gearing up. You're not claiming that you did that when you were low-mid gear score in a pickup group are you? Based on your join date and post count I'm guessing you were a high geared mage long before the random dungeon thing ever came out.

I just mean, in general. Most of my groups are not at the 45-90 second boss kill window. Doesn't matter if I'm tanking on my Druid, DPS on my Mage or healing on my Priest.
