Leveling advice - Heirlooms and etc.

Hey everyone,
Looking for some quick advice on leveling a new paladin with the eventual purpose of getting into BGs/Arena and in the future rated BGs in Cataclysm. I played a Paladin a long time ago - back when we had just one judgement spell, no crusader strike, and illumination returned 100% of your mana on crits!
But now I'm looking to get back into the action with what was arguably my favorite class to PvP with.
1) My question regarding leveling has to do with Heirlooms - I have an 80 Priest with whom I can instance/raid but not too many emblems.
If you had to prioritize, which heirloom items would you shoot for first (for Ret) given the choice between shoulders, chest and 2H weapon?
2) Also, with the shoulders and chest - plate seems like the obvious choice

But do you think maybe the
leather
ones (

) might be a good idea given the lack of hit gear while leveling up?
3) With regards to leveling, since it has been ages since I've gone through the old content - are there any phases of leveling when doing something
other than
questing might be faster? Maybe PvP in AV during 51-60 since I understand BGs gives XP now? Or Outland instances from 60-70 thanks to the dungeon finder?
Any thoughts?
Thank you!

1) I leveled a ret paladin from ~3-80 with the cloth heirloom chest and cloth PvP heirloom shoulders. If it has +10% exp written on it somewhere, it is better than anything you will find up to 80. Only get the weapon if you have emblems to spare.
2) You don't need as much hit rating to level, because 1) you aren't habitually attacking mobs three levels higher than you and 2) a little hit rating goes a long way. I have about 20 on a 59 elemental shaman I'm leveling now and between that and the hit talent in the ele tree I'm pretty far overcapped on mobs my own level. I would especially take the plate shoulders because survivability is much more important while leveling than it is for DPS in PvE content.
3) Questing is probably the fastest objective method of leveling. The human sense of time passing is pretty subjective (read: wrong) though, so whatever you enjoy the most will probably seem like the fastest.

Hit and expertise are rare at low levels, if you can get your hands on them, GET THEM, but not at the expense of weapon DPS or experience gear. Nothing makes you want to wrists more than miss, dodge, parry, miss on a 3sec swing timer on one freak'n mob that you can easily 2-shot in addition to a judgment.
That lasts untill about SoC, but even then its not too fun.
Like said above experience gear > * Do questing between random dungeons.

Thank you for the advice, guys! You've been most helpful.
I'll pick up the +XP% items then (since I hear they now work for both mob kills and quest xp gains)? Would essentially save 20-30 hours of extra leveling in the grand scheme of things - if not more.
I guess this also means making a beeline for Verigan's Fist as soon as I can!

Thanks for the Fiery suggestion - I think I remember doing that with my old Paladin too a few years back. It certainly was a
blast
! :)
Interesting about the gear from Stone Keepers shards - I actually do have a decent amount of those on my Priest but was kind of leaning towards exchanging them for Wintergrasp Commendations (
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44115
) to get an honor head-start on my Paladin... for nostalgia reasons I was considering buying the GM Claymore at 60 at the same time I get Divine Storm... that would make for some interesting Outlands moments.
Although I could just as easily turn those in for a Truesilver Champion and have a decent sword from the get-go.
So Hero emblems for the shoulders + chest; shards for the weapon, probably.

Personally, I buy all my shoulders with shards, just because I have a lot of alts and its faster that way. In the same time it takes to get 40 emblems, you have about 200 shards, and can get both at the same time.
They aren't quite as good as the PvE shoulders, but they're still better than almost any drops until outland, and even then they keep up.
