((Last one of this series, I’ll be starting another one with these same characters in a little while. I don’t know what it will be called yet, but you can probably tell which one it is.))
-Khaz knelt in the remains of the shack next to prisoners of other races. Outside he could hear the sounds of battle, and the chapel burning. “The Chapel of Crimson Flame,” he said softly, “is burning. How ironic.” The human next to him, wearing an Argent Dawn tabard, chuckled, but quickly stopped, tears forming in her eyes again.
-Khaz looked over at her. “What’s your name?” he asked. The prisoner looked back at him. “Ellen. Ellen Stanbridge. And you?” she said softly. “I am Khaz Orebeard. As you can probably tell I am not of the Argent Dawn.” Ellen chuckled. “Yes, I can see that. Why are you here?”
-“It’s a sad story actually,” said Khaz. Ellen raised an eyebrow. “I’ve got the rest of my life. Do tell.” Khaz chuckled and nodded. “Very well.” And he told his story, about the battle at Northgate Pass and the trip underground, to the separation and the death of Khorin. Ellen sighed and said, “That is sad… I hope your friend finds peace in the Light.” Khaz chuckled, “He was a priest, I’m sure he will.”
-They sat the last few moments together when he heard something outside, somebody speaking. With a chill he heard the echoing voice of a Death Knight. “We got here, tore the place apart, and headed toward the prison house. We weren't expecting what we found in there, Pätryn. Seems the Crusade's been real busy. That whole thing is full of Argent Dawn prisoners. Most of them were already dead by the time we arrived, but a few were still breathing.”
The commander chuckled, the continued. “I was about to go in there and execute the rest of them, but I think you should have the honors. In particular, there's a real feisty human in there that I think you'll take great pleasure in executing.” He heard a chuckle, darker sounding than the commander’s, for that was who he must be, statement. “Of course… I will take pleasure in it…” said the Death Knight, who could only be Pätryn.
-Ellen hadn’t heard yet, and Khaz didn’t say anything. The Death Knight walked inside. A malevolent soldier, he was human, of middling height. He wore a hood covering his head and a scarf covering his face, revealing only blue glinting eyes. In his hands was a large sword, glowing with blue energy.
-Ellen stood up. “Come to finish the job, have you?” she growled. “I’d like to stand for…” she trailed off. “Pätryn?” she asked, horrified. Pätryn, I'd recognize that face anywhere.... What..... What have they done to you, Pätryn?” she asked in horror. Pätryn looked at her, hand drifting to his sword. “You don't remember me, do you? Blasted Scourge.... They've tried to drain you of everything that made you a righteous force of reckoning. Every last ounce of good... Everything that made you a human!” Ellen said, aghast. Still Pätryn did nothing.
-“ Think, Pätryn. Think back. Try and remember the hills and valleys of Elwynn, where you were born. Remember the splendor of life, brother. You were a champion of the Alliance once! This isn't you.” Pätryn’s eyes glowed a bit brighter, and he took a step closer. He knelt down next to her, staring at her intently. She was about to say something else when she gritted her teeth and grabbed her side, blood leaking through her fingers.
-She took a breath and tried again, “Listen to me, Pätryn. You must fight against the Lich King's control. He is a monster that wants to see this world - our world - in ruin. Don't let him use you to accomplish his goals. You were once a hero and you can be again. Fight, damn you! Fight his control!” Pätryn nodded slowly, hand still on his sword. Khaz heard a shout from outside. “What’s going on in there? What’s taking so long, Pätryn!” shouted the commander.
-Ellen gritted her teeth again, her side had begun to bleed harder. She grabbed Pätryn and pulled him closer. “There... There's no more time for me. I'm done for. Finish me off, Pätryn. Do it or they'll kill us both. Pätryn ... Remember Elwynn. This world is worth saving...” Pätryn stood, and pulled his sword from its sheath. “No!” cried Khaz in horror. Ellen turned a sad smile to the dwarf. “My wounds hurt Khaz, I don’t have much time, especially not for bleeding sides,” she said in mock lightness.
-Ellen turned back to Pätryn. “Please, do it.” Slowly he nodded, and the sword swung down. “No!” cried Khaz, one last, feeble time. Ellen smiled at him, and gasped, the sword piercing her chest. She grunted, and slid off the blade to land on the ground, dead. Khaz leapt to his feet and threw a fist at Pätryn. “How could you!” he yelled. Pätryn grimaced, and swung his sword again. Khaz only had one brief period to cry out before the sword plunged into his chest, right through his heart.
-Khaz fell, color draining from his vision as the Death Knight walked outside. He heard the commander say, “Felt good, didn't it? You're not one of them anymore, Pätryn. You're Scourge. You're one of us. Forever...” He knew it to be true…
