There's nothing wrong with using Affliction. You will just want to use the proper things in the proper order. Affliction is currently the top-DPSing spec... though, Demonology is threatening its placement, right now.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to give Destruction a try. I love it. It's my prime raiding spec. And yes, read Asakawa's Demonomicon. The man has done his research. There are oodles of good information to be mined there. And, links to lots of other good information. Almost, too much good information to be digested, all at once.
Welcome to the world of eightishness. You're just getting started. ;-) (As I learned, only a short time ago)

threat = damage
do more damage, get more threat.
more damage is good. pulling threat is bad. it's a balance thing.
if your tank can handle it then you should spam seeds for best damage output.
on forums like this we tend to discuss the best possible scenario and plan to do the highest output, we leave it to each player to temper this best practice with whatever they can practically achieve.

Aye. In random (Dungeon Finder) 5-mans, I feel out how well my tank is able to keep aggro, before I start popping trinkets and doing other things to ratchet my damage up. And, before I really start casting SoC like crazy.
SoC is particularly dangerous, because you can get a crapload of aggro, very quickly. Especially, if you get one or two crits in close succession. And Omen Threat Meter just isn't very helpful with SoC. You change targets too often, and SoC's damage is far too spiky and chaotic, to get a decent reading on each target's estimated threat, in a pack of mobs.

Nice thread, and glad I read it just for that guide linked above. I will say that I'm back after a year-ish break and hitting up northrend dungeons.
My toon
I'll note that with the AoE spam, it just doesn't seem viable for aff specs as the packs of mobs just die too fast. I've always used demo for leveling until I get geared up then switch to Dest/Aff for raids depending on various circumstances and if I have a complimentary guild lock. I'm probably a bit more geared than the typical lock at 70, but I'm averageing 1300-1600 dps with a demo build, with some nice survivability tools.
I've had a few ppl ' lol - demo... ' at the beginning then shut up when I double their damage. I guess it's ' whatever works for you' in the end as who really cares about meters as long as the dungeon goes smooth, but thus far demo is where I'm comfortable doing my job.
