Seems like they had
Righteous Fury
on, which is something a new/inexperienced ret might do - aka a 800 dps one. However, don't underestimate ret's ability to cause aggro on multiple targets at the same time with
Seal of Cleave
and the so-called
lolstorm
.
Besides that, retribution has talented
aggro reduction
, which everyone probably has specced.

No, even then its hard for 800 DPS paladins to pull off 1500+ tanks.
It's probably Hand of Reckoning, I suggest recount and checking that they don't use it.

Hello, my warrior tank hit 80 about a week ago and since then I've done a
lot
of heroics, a trend that I've noticed is that ret paladins pull aggro from me a lot, mostly when their dps is low! I've grouped with 5k dps pallies who haven't pulled aggro off me and 800dps ones who have, they sometimes are already targetted by approaching mobs - scripted moments when they're stood behind me and not casting. Does retribution cause some innate aggro or am I just being paranoid?
That must be a retardins. A poor subsection of a nice class, thy causing trouble by just their presence in the party.

Actually, I've noticed lately on my Paladin (and sometimes my Rogue) that mobs flat out attack me during pulls even if I stand there and don't do anything at first. I'll be behind the tank, sometimes quite a distance from the incoming mobs, and they'll sometimes run right by the tank and immediately start attacking me as if I ran in with guns blazing.
It goes without saying that I'll sometimes get lucky on white and command crits right off the bat and pull threat, but having mobs try to beastmode me when I haven't touched them and the tank performed some kind of physical action against them is odd and has never happened to me up until a few weeks ago.

Don't forget about world aggro from mana regen and healing. Judgements of the Wise and Divine Storm will give every mob in combat a small bit of aggro, and if the tank hasn't attacked them, the paladin can easily pull them off.

I have no idea why, but this happens sometimes to me too. I'll attack the skulled mob and stop attacking to let the others gain threat, and it still keeps at me.

I have been having this trouble too.
I have also been seeing threat issues in heroics, where originally I would be just fine on threat lately my threat has been astronomical even with Fanaticism and no Righteous Fury.

if divine plea is ticking on you when a tank does a runup pull, you'll pull aggro. If you cast sacred shield after the pull, but before the tank has done any action, you'll pull aggro... these are things you might need to watch out for..
that having been said, i too have noticed my threat being unusually high on my retadin even when i'm running to approach a mob after the tank's pull..

Hmm... Divine Plea aggro's. That doesn't sound right I use it all the time for mana on my ret and never pull aggro.
More then likely its what the other people have said that ether they have fury up our they used the hand of reconing (sp) which will pull aggro off the tank. Or a combo of both.
Any person that plays this game should have Omen3 it tells you if your getting close to pulling aggro. It helps alot on aggro control if your coming up on the tank's aggro then slow down your attacks and let them build it up again. If not they will be spending alot of money on repair bills.

I think it could be a bug. Now my own pally is prot/holy, so I'm either at the front and supposed to take aggro or so far behind I'm not in the aggro range.
But on my rogue I sometimes have this problem as well. I come up in stealth, open with a
TotT
on the tank and then a garrote, S&D and quick burst of mut(to 4+ combo points) then envenom. Due to TotT, all aggro (which is around 5k burst with a few crits) gets instantly transferred to the tank, and omen shows me as having absolutely zero the whole time. Yet sometimes the mob turns around anyway and takes a hit on me (note: this is still within the time of TotT and still with zero threat). One time even surrounding mobs, which I never actually hit, slapped me then turned back to the tank.
Now, I've been spamming a lot of heroics on my pally, so I know which mobs take random targets (like those annoying Gorlocs in Gundrak) but these were just your standard threat-based mobs.
The most annoying part about this is I'm pretty crappy geared (ilevel 200 epics mostly back from 3.0) so if say marwin crits me it's one dead rogue -.-'
Next time it happens I'll try to remember to make a screenshot once I've hit evasion =p Although it's usually just 1 hit and they turn back to the tank.

Only possibility of random mobs hitting you is if the mob is rooted somehow, tank was out of range and you were the closest one to it. In that scenario they would turn to attack you before getting unrooted.
Yeah I tend to pull aggro from tanks on my ret paladin. I generally cane take a hit or two but if I run into a problem I just bubble. The warriors generally put Vigilance on me one we get rolling and that seems to solve the problem a bit. It's just the aggro we get on trash packs, our aoe is pretty amazing in both ret and prot. Nothing you can do about that.

'cept the mobs weren't rooted and the tank was standing right in front of them. This happens during the pull only, once in combat I don't have the problem ('cept for the random targeting mobs ofc.)
hence:
