How is Ret Dps? Asked by a priest

I'm curious as I'm pondering an alt. I have a 65 shaman and a 70 pal(who I only tanked with waaaay back in BC days). Back then, Ret was considered broken and I know it's been tweaked since.
I was hoping to just make stuff dead, so I was leveling a shaman as Ench for giggles. Recent events have suggested a part time standby tank would be nice to have, so with a dual spec I could fill this role. However, I still want to be able to just farm / kill stuff. Are paladins ok in this role now?
I know pvp wise, my priest gets ganked by enough of them which I'm sure is mostly user error as I don't pvp much, but I really have little knowledge of how the class is now compared to when I actually played it, so I have some learning to do. So I ask here. Stick with my shaman and kill stuff, hoping my friends and I find another part time tank, or dual spec and hopefully get the joys of both worlds.
Thoughts would be appreciated.

You could keep prot and with few ret pieces you can make a very nice DPS of it.
Recount - Damage Done for Overall Data
Retri 2746891 (3752.8, 31.5%)
Me(prot) 2323595 (2860.5, 26.6%)
Hunter 2004551 (3329.5, 23%)
Shammy(ele) 1621359 (2905.9, 18.6%)
To add, my gear that i'm using for "DPS-like" build isn't great, just what felt into my pocket. It's mostly the same tanking gear with exception of 219' ret legs, Dragon Wrath hands and Majestic Silversmith Shoulderplates.

Ret DPS is comparable to other hybrids, meaning: ceterus parabus, you'll be ~5% behind rogues, mages, warlocks, and hunters, and pulling the same DPS as any other hybrid class which is DPS specced.
In shorter words: Any class is fine for DPS, do the one you like more.

We're just as good as everyone else, and paladins are great for the role indicated.

What he means to say is paladin are the best class EVER!
I actually would recommend you do the paladin because I blink and stuff dies with my terribad ret gear. Like..really bad...like...under 4k gs.

Killing things that drop Eternals is very easy as Retribution, if that's what you're asking. You can also do 6k DPS in the Emblem of Triumph and 232 ICC 5man gear. (But so can every DPS class/spec, in my opinion.)
In the end, play what you want. Every class has people that play them.
