-The remaining dwarves rejoiced, having defeated an entire army of dragonmaw orcs at the Northgate Pass. However this was only the beginning…
- Fünden was celebrating in the typical dwarven fashion, involving much ale and beer, when Commander Skymace, the leader of the legion from Ironforge, walked up and placed a hand on both of their shoulders. “Boys, I need ta talk ta ye.” He said, motioning them outside.
-They exited the building and walked beneath a nearby tree. The day was bright and shining, and Fünden never would have suspected that an army of orcs had just attacked. Except for the bloodstains on the walls. If only they could stay away. I don’t see why they need more territory, they have plenty of space,” Fünden thought bitterly. “If these stupid orcs hadn’t been attackin’ us they would still be livin’. They surely know how powerful we are, and it makes no sense for an army of them to be attackin’ while we have a legion o’ soldiers here. They could have waited a day or two and ye would have been gone,” Fünden said thoughtfully
-Commander Skymace nodded. “Aye. We don’ no why they are comin’ when they could have waited. It makes me think somethin’s goin’ wrong down in Wetlands. We haven’t received any couriers for a few days, and we think somethin’ happened to the people there.” Fünden grew more nervous at each word, as did Khaz. Commander Skymace motioned them back into the tower and held up a few boxes of ammo. “Here,” he said, shoving the boxes at them. “Fresh in from Thelsamar.”
-Fünden opened one of the boxes of ammo and pulled out three ammo belts, which he looped over his shoulders. He grabbed his mithril axe and belted it on his back. Khaz pulled out a few belts as well, but his only other weapons was a small stone mace.
-Commander Skymace nodded in approval. “Ye appear ready to go. One more thing.” He waved his hand and two of the dwarves from Thelsamar ran over. “This be Karn Iceshatter,” he said, pointing at one heavily armored dwarf. Fünden could tell from the look of him he was one of the dwarven paladins, he was holding a libram. “And Khorin Firebane,” he said, pointing to the other. Fünden supposed he was a priest, after all the dwarf was wearing white and gold robes and holding a mace. “They be comin’ in from Anvilmar about four days ago and stopped in Thelsamar.”
-Fünden nodded at the two dwarves. “Why Thelsamar? Anywhere you specific ye were goin’ to?” The priest nodded. “Aye. We were headin’ ta Howlin’ Fjord. He heard o’ some ruins up that way that needed investigating.” Fünden nodded. Been awhile since I was at some ruins,” he thought envisioning Uldaman. The stone spire speared the dwarf through the gut, blowing him against the wall. The golem, if it had a face, would have been smiling… “No, don’t think about that!” he muttered to himself. The others looked at him oddly. “Sorry, just… reminiscin,” he said shortly.
-The others nodded. “We’ll be be sendin’ ye ta Howlin’ Fjord after this, we need more men like you fightin’ the Scourge. But right now ye need ta be headin’ through the tunnel. We need ye to see wha’ be goin’ on over there.” Fünden shrugged. “When do we go?” he asked. Commander Skymace answered. “Right now. Unless you need somethin’ else first?” All shook their heads. “Good, then off with ye,” he said, spitting on the floor.
-Fünden and khaz exited the building with Karn and Khorin. The tunnel loomed ahead of them, orcish fortifications evident. “At least there ain’t any orcs in th’ tunnel,” said Karn. Khorin nodded, as did Khaz and Fünden. “Though I wouldn’t mind of some o’ those greenskins came outta that righ’ now,” said Khaz, fingering his rifle.
-They passed into the tunnel. It was dark and eerie inside, full of dripping water. Fünden gripped his axe handle uncertainly. He thought he heard scurrying in the shadows, but whenever he turned to look he saw nothing. “Any o’ ye hear tha’?” asked Khorin uncertainly. Fünden started. “Scrabblin’ sounds, and scurryin’?” he asked. Khorin nodded. Fünden sighed. “Aye, I be hearin’ that.”
-Khaz flipped around and fired. The bullet whizzed into the darkness, and there was a cracking sound, as if the bullet had sheared through ice, or perhaps strong glass. Fünden grunted. “Khaz, don’t be firin’ at stone walls. You as well as anyone should know that,” he said, chuckling. Khaz turned to stare at him, wide eyed. “There’s something to our right, through a new tunnel…” he murmured, pointing.
-Fünden slipped on some goggles, as did the other dwarves. True enough, in front of them spread a new tunnel, going thirty feet before descending sharply. “Well, we can’t be seein’ what it is if we’re stuck here now can we?” grunted Fünden, stumping over to the tunnel. Sure enough, he saw something down at the far end. “Looks like some sort of bug casing…” he said thoughtfully. Khorin nodded. “Beetle. But there aren’t any that large this far south.” He said, walking into the tunnel. He held up his hands and light spread from them, illuminating the casing.
-It was purple and green, with large pincers at the front. Fünden crept closer and poked it with his axe. It fell over, exposing its belly. A large bullet hole was immediately obvious, with dark fluid leaking out of it. “What kind o’ beetle is it?” Khaz asked nobody in particular. Khorin answered, “I would say it’s a –“ when he jerked and fell sideways. He breathed, but barely. Fünden looked up at Khorin’s attacker, and quailed in fear.
