Is it illegal? Well as illegal as just getting your account banned can be. You don't face any real consequences if you choose to purchase something and your account goes poof, or you get hacked. As stated there are truly legitimate sites that sell gold, accounts, items, w/e you may end up looking for. Just have to be smart with google. It pretty muchly just comes down to whether or not you feel the risk of losing your account to banhammer or hack is worth the saved time in buying w/e you may need. My personal view on it is, if you want to spend your hard earned real money on something in a game that you don't have as much time to spend on getting it, then hey, do what you want. As long as you know the risks involved and accept them, then it's all on you. And there are sites that give you 100% chance of no hack. Or atleast one of said sites that I know of from the 10minutes that I just spent googling around for. Like any other illegal activity, be smart and you won't get caught; be stupid, and pay the "consequences" that come with it. /endmy2cents.

It makes no difference to me.
Ive played far too many mmorpgs to ever consider it a problem anymore. Do I care that someone makes real money? Not really. Do I care that real money is a driving effort for some? Not really. Do I care that the "value" of my games world equates into to real money? Actually, Im impressed that so many people are so
into it
. Do I care that someone buys money? No, because people give away assistance all the time. Often its far more valuable then game gold.
If I give my gold to player X, and he repays with his friendship and kindness or with his in-game time, then its ok. But if player Y finds another attribute in which to barter ($) then its cheating for those?
No. As I said, I'm long over it. Heck, EQ2 had realms set up to use real world money between players if they so chose. ;)
If the Chinese (or whomever) earn it like everyone else (not via a hack or dupe) then I could care less what happens to that gold since its been legitimately garnered by the original source.

I know someone who used to buy gold all the time from a site that will not be named. He was never banned, or hacked. They didn't ask him for his account info or anything like that. So I would say, yes, there are legit sites. However, you still run the risk of getting banned, blah blah. etc etc
Also talking about it on these forums is taboo...

If you buy gold, you're giving some low-life scumbag piece of @#$% a reason to hack another account. Maybe the next account is your friend's. Don't do it.
Not all gold that is sold comes from hacked accounts, also if anyone gets hacked its their own fault.

Gold buying/selling is against Blizzard's ToS, you'll get in troubles.
One answer is sure :
do not buy gold online, earn it yourself!

Buying gold is the wrng way to go about it. U will never know how to make it. On my 56pally Ive made 21k total gold so far so making gold isn't that hard you just have to figure out your server econmy. And if u buy gold what r u going to do when u run out? Buy some more? Not worth it in my eyes
found a floor in this person, in another post he claims to have made up to 60k gold on his 56 paladin.
sounds like a lie to me, i know its do-able, but when 2 posts dont match up, that makes me wonder

You don't give gold sellers your account name and password
/facepalm
and the difference between buying gold and godmoding your way through a game is that this game doesn't end no matter how good your gear
for instance, say you have no money and you want 5k gold so you can level engineering... will that REALLY make the game lame for you? I mean really? Doing dailies everyday for a couple months really sounds that fun to you huh?
All of your posts in this thread amount to an endorsement of gold-buying. I don't care if you don't like having to play the game to advance your gear in the game - buying gold is against the Blizzard ToS, and thus against Wowhead rules.
Admins, could we please get these posts deleted?

There are def. legit gold selling services who make their money solely on selling WoW gold if you did your research you could probably find one
How do you know that not a single one of the gold they sell comes from a compromised account? Because they told you so?
Buying gold boils down to one thing: by buying gold you are supporting thieves that have no scruples keylogging and stealing from others. Some thieves will claim that they farmed all the gold themselves. DON'T BELIEVE A THIEF! Of course they tell you that their gold is legit. Some even tell you that they are endorsed by Blizzard. Again: DON'T BELIEVE A THIEF!
So if you've ever had a friend or guildie being sad because his account was stolen and cleaned out, you can't seriously be thinking about paying the *!@#$%^s that did it.. First of I would make you a bad friend. Secondly, volunteering your credit card info to people like that is beyond stupid.
I don't care whether people buy power leveling or not. If they feel like giving their credit card and account info to some stranger on the net it's their own decision. If Blizz find out and ban their account it's their loss. Your account, your decision, you pay the price if it fails.
But buying gold is a whole different matter, because in order to have gold to sell, the gold sellers keylog and steal accounts, which basically means that you're financing someone to ruin the enjoyment of others.
In my opionion people that buy gold are just as bad as those that steal it. My guild has a strict policy, that if you buy gold you get the boot. Naturally we can't prove if someone bought gold or not, but sometimes a guildie asks why we have that rule and we get to explain how gold sellers get the gold they sell and how supporting thieves like that isn't compatable with being in our guild.

Aside from the negative effect on the server economy, many gold selling websites have malicious code in the page that will install a keylogger onto your machine.
Can you say "New
'I got hacked! QQ'
thead on Wowhead?"
Gold is honestly not that hard to make. Sure, farming dailies and random heroics on several 80's is repetitive and often boring, but what's the point in just having it handed to you? It's a game; there's supposed to be even a small element of challenge or work involved.
There's also something to be said about farming resources and holding the Auction House for ransom... * cough *

I don't actually believe that there are any which are not connected to hacks and account theft. It makes no sense. Once they've decided they don't care about following rules,
why wouldn't they break a couple more rules?
Because those rules send you to jail.
Well, actually, they don't. Failing to provide the gold after collecting your money does not send them to jail. It probably doesn't even measurably get them in trouble. Neither does cracking peoples' accounts.
The correlation between gold-selling and account-hacking is not some kind of wacky coincidence.
