I myself think that hunters should have their primary weapon on their back. For the other classes, imo it should be optional. Sometimes they look cool just casting with no weapon, but other times the weapon is epic looking and BY GOSH I WANT IT THERE.
Yes I used caps. So sue me.

i've seen alot of things like this players running around your screen with unnecessary huge weapons for example i recently saw a mage wondering around with the thunderfury and i was like wtf is a mage doing with that?

I like Funden's idea of it being optional. In fact, this could just be done as an all-character/class option. You select which weapon you want displayed, or even to display no weapon at all.
Just imagine a puny Gnome Warrior with no weapon visible running up to you looking as if he's going to punch you in the fa-

.
Next thing you know, you're dead.

You gain the benefit of your wand's stats at all times. So go ahead and pick one with whatever stats you need!
While right now, your wand is an invaluable tool, later it will be a stat stick. A beautiful, beautiful stat stick...mostly just brought out when you're goofing around.
I would love it if my priest could display her wand instead of her MH/OH sometimes.
