So many of my WoW playing friends have given decided over the past year to quit playing the game, or to at least take an indefinite break. But as more and more Cataclysm news has been released, most of them have said they'll play again when Cataclysm comes out. In fact, I think the amount of people I know that actively play, at least for a time, will effectively double when the expansion is released. So I've begun wondering...
Anyone else in a similar boat?
And is anyone else a little worried about the servers being able to handle the load when Cataclysm hits the streets?

Sure, a lot of people may come back, but also imagine how many people are going to quit when it comes out. I was in active raiding guilds prior to both the release of TBC and WotLK. I know a lot of people who quit after their releases, whereas many of the friends I made only started playing after the release.
It's really not something that is measurable. Some people will quit, some people will join. That's just how it is. As far as the servers go, though, I'm sure they'll be fine. I don't think the increase in players will be that dramatic as to cause problems, except for maybe the first day or two where everyone is in one zone at once, which happens every expansion and should not come as surprise to anyone.

Well, as Denkou said, I agree with the him that how many people quit/join is not measurable. But. If there's an expansion pack, it's definitely gonna be crazy , because everyone wants to know what it's like, and if they don't like it, only then do they quit or not. So, I personally think, that with changes this big, there's gonna be a
little
lag in the servers... ^^
But I don't think it's gonna take too long...

Angel, some people will look at patch notes and say "I dont like this change. I quit." For example, a die-hard hunter may look at the change from mana to focus and say "This changes my playstyle from the one I love, I'd rather find a different game" or "This is going to nerf my DPS so bye." The former is understandible, although they could give it a shot or try another class, whereas the second is a "fact" which is based on conjecture and therefore a bad reason.
I think all that will happen with Cata as far as population goes is a spike in what happens normally: people start playing, people quit playing, people take breaks, people pick the game back up, people leave/join/make guilds or hop to a new realm. It's just going to be a bigger spike because levelling 80-85 basically resets all progression via 85 gear being vastly superior.
Thus, you're looking at the drama of people picking new mains (my guild loves me as a healer but I'm rolling a pure DPS class in cataclysm), you're looking at new guilds forming (on a lot of realms the further progressed guilds are older guilds - newer guilds may progress faster but be behind because of the head start) which will be somewhat competitive on progression. That's what I'm more interested in, is to see what happens with progression post-cataclysm.
