I pretty much always Innervate the one who needs the more mana (beside Warlock, since he's gonna Life Tap anyway). Most healer now have a crazy mana regen and won't even need it, but if I see a caster DPS (let's say an elemental shammy, a ret pal, or a Mage) that need mana, I'll make sure to innervate them before the next pull so we have less downtime.
In the case of a Mage, that also leave their Evocation and Mana Gem cooldown intact in case they need it later on.

I make an effort to save it for the healer but depending on where we're at in the instance and how the healer's mana is looking so far I may opt for a dps caster or just save it a little longer if the healer doesn't yet need it but will.
It definitely allows us as tanks to keep the group moving.

I do the same thing, as far as innervating a mage, shaman, priest or healer. I now do it just to keep the flow going, especially if the DPS is going all out in 5 mans, it keeps the pace high. Healers, for the most part, don't really need it though. Heck, even as boomkin i'll throw my innervate on another class.

It keeps flow up better to pop an innervate on your healer, yes. But I once innervated a healer and once I saw him at full mana I moved onto the next group of mobs, some fool dps grabbed another group and all 3 dps died on aggro-independant attacks. Guess where the healer was? That's right, around the corner drinking. Apparently he hadn't noticed that I had innervated him and had gone afk for a bit. I guess the moral of the story is to just let a healer know if you're innervating them.

Any hints on reducing the amount of getting beat up you sustain during casting of innervate?
Obviously, keep the amount of time you spend out of bear form to a minimum, 1 GCD. So keep your controls situated with this in mind. Watch out for stunning mobs.
May it be worth the CD to pop barkskin for this?

Do it between pulls :P
If you absolutely must do it mid pull barkskin is a good option but try to time it during long casts from the mobs or between swings.

if (and hardly ever) i have to innervate a healer mid combat always bob Barkskin for this. as if your really in that much need to innervate the healer he will most likely not be able to heal you during the time your popped out.. but normally i just blow my cooldowsn till mobs are dead and innervate + give him slight mana break after mobs are dead

The only time you'll realistically be able to innervate (or sometimes even rebirth) while tanking is if you're on something that's casting. For example, I recently managed both while doing the blood prince council, tanking Taldaram, while he cast his flame sphere. It was still pretty risky, though, I wouldn't recommend doing it regularly, wait until natural breaks in the combat (blood queen's air phase, that sort of thing) if at all possible, and if you're being meleed, don't even think about it.

I have done a rebirth while tanking twins 10man before, just let your healers know and pop barkskin.
Ofc on the harder hitting bosses, like mr. fester, I wouldn't advise it :p but 5mans shouldn't be a prob imo.
That said, if I see someone drinking in a 5man (or typing "mb"), I cast innervate and keep on running ^^
