Well...You do need one blue to keep the meta gem active! Mp5 and spirit are both fairly sub-par stats for disc, so go with whichever is cheapest tbh. ^^

If you have extra Mana @ the end of a raid boss, you have too much int. (so start grabbing SP> Crit>Haste.) If not, get more int.
I'd say if you have extra mana at the the end of raid boss with a less than average set of players. If you gem yourself solely for the elite players, you're going to be in big trouble if you ever run with a raid that is less accomplished.

Its very difficult to prove there's a difference.
Someone with a smaller effective mana pool will have a higher throughput, and thus need to heal less often, potentially increasing their effective mana pool through increased oo5sr time, and needing to cast fewer spells, thus draining their pool less.
