Hey guys I have a quick question reguarding gems as far as a prot warrior.
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Mug%27thol&cn=Throatriper
is my current setup thus far and I was approched by a DK today in a 25m ToC (which got me Juggernaughts Vitality) and gave me a "O_o" face then stating "You stack parry?".
I was told by him that stacking parry isint that great because of DR?
So can someon ellaborate for me that actually knows what they are tlaking about? Should I just be stacking stamina?

Parry? PARRY?
lol, sorry, anyway, gemming for parry is pretty much a nono. Gemmingswise it's dodge>defence>parry if you wanne go for pure avoidence so it's no wonder.
If you wanne tank the best you can with your gear, then yes, get the defcap and feel free to go al out on stamina, you get plenty of avoidence from gear.
(let's not turn this into a EH versus avoidencetreat)

avoidance is unreliable, which is why nobody stacks it. i would not use a single tanking gem that did not have at least 15 stamina on it, and 30's are highly preferred unless the socket bonus is worth it.
the only real thing avoidance does is save some healer mana (if they are reactively healing, which can be a separate problem). healers don't really run out of mana these days, so it's a pretty weak reason.
big spiky damage is what kills you - avoidance makes that worse and stamina/armor make it better.

I know that's not what you mean, but just to get people on the right track: Avoidance
instead of stamina
makes you more prone to spike damage death. Avoidance in itself is good.
As for parry, in most cases it will be hit harder by diminishing returns than defense or dodge rating. If you have a lot of dodge and very little parry, it can still become a good avoidance stat.

Pre-TBC mana was much more of a concern for healers, but then they also had more tools to work with to manage their mana (downranking was king back then). Spikes were still a concern, but mostly focused on crushing blows. Or special things like staying alive through an AoE fear.
Tank balance was much less of an issue back then though, since there was only one class capable of tanking the big raids. Druids could tank some stuff, and on a few bosses were even preferable, but you wouldn't see feral druids in major raiding guilds. Paladins were presumably in a similar situation, but I can't say for sure since we hordies didn't have them at the time.

yeah, you're right - i didn't mean to make it sound like avoidance is bad. poor wording.

Yep, we were. It's worrying when the vanilla strategy guides reckon that Shamans made better tanks than Paladins did, and that we were only good for off-tanking due to our plate armour.
I think it said that Paladins could "heal with Holy, DPS with Retribution (with a big damage weapon), and tank with Protection (but it will be Very Difficult)".
