Oh and while I'm at it (totally unrelated to the issue):
I haven't really found a good way to track totem times with DoTimer. It will display cooldowns just fine but not remaining duration (which is quite important for Magma Totem or Searing Totem). I fixed it by just creating a custom notification whenever I use one of those totems so that I get a custom timer to display. Works, got no problems with it really but out of curiosity: Is there really no easier way to do it?
As to your layout: I can see how that'd work. Just seems (without trying it) that it'd be a little cluttered. Most of my DoTimer usage is on my paladin tank, where seeing what IS on cooldown is more important for the 9696 rotation than seeing what's available, since once I have the rotation going there's much more on than not on cooldown. :)
As for totem timers, I use the
TotemTimers addon which puts a floating combat text warning when things are about to expire, i.e. Searing Totem, Magma Totem, Lightning/Water Shield, etc. It also has configurable timers under each totem icon to let you know. I also like it's configuability more than the stock UI. It also allows for multiple sets of totems with only one "Call" spell, which is super handy.
The other thing I do for cooldowns is
OmniCC. It puts a nice timer right on the button to go with the faded swing timer, and has optional
glow or
burst effects, so you don't have to be looking right at it to know when it's up. Everyone works differently, of course, but I go by a lot of visual cues, so when I'm in the flow of an encounter, when different buttons pop, I generally know which is which based on what location of the screen "pops" at me.
I know that's a little off-subject, but I don't use DoTimers for everything, just mainly cooldowns on my quick-burning abilities, and then my regular toolbars for everything else.
