I've been trying to work out how much crit increases a paladins effective mana.
For those of you not familiar with paladins,
Illumination
refunds 30% of the base cost of the spell each time you crit.
What i've got so far is this
This gives me the mana regained from spending my entire mana pool, and also the regained mana from spending the mana that i regained.
Example:
Which is correct, but i don't know where to go from here, since the 243 mana that is now left over (i've only spent 32700 mana so far) is still able to regenerate mana through crits.
I've tried several solutions but i've found no practical way of doing this that will give me my actual effective mana.
Any and all ideas/suggestions are highly appreciated!
Edit:
Thanks to the lovely
Quest
, case is solved.
If anyone showed any interest in this, here's the solution:
mana*(1/(1-(Crit%*0.3)))

The above post is assuming that you have no mana return from Divine Plea, Revitalize, Rapture, Mana Tide .. and the list goes on.
A lot of Paladin theorycrafters use the idea that using 25HLPM, 10 FoLPM, and 2 HSPM will grant 0.2 MP5 per crit rating. It's not incredibly accurate, but this is how they get that number:
(HLPM*382.2*0.0002178*1/12) + (FoLPM*92.1*0.0002178*1/12) + (HSPM*237.3*0.0002178*1/12)
(25*382.2*0.0002178*1/12) + (10*92.1*0.0002178*1/12) + (2*237.3*0.0002178*1/12)
0.1987
The first number is the amount of casts per minute, the second is the mana return from getting a crit, the third is the percentage of crit you get per crit rating in decimal form, and the fourth is the amount of MP5 ticks in a minute, 12.
However, in ICC, there's a lot of movement oriented fights, and you obviously can't cast Holy Light (the biggest mana return from a crit) on the move, so the amount of MP5 gained is lower. Using my personal 25-man logs, I found these numbers:
Festergut: 0.2286 MP5 per crit
BQL: 0.1885 MP5 per crit
BPC: 0.1841 MP5 per crit
Marrowgar: 0.1793 MP5 per crit
Rotface: 0.1649 MP5 per crit
Deathwhisper: 0.1421 MP5 per crit
In terms of ICC, I found that the amount of HLPM is typically, on average, around 20, and on Festergut, around 30. And with the amount of movement in the fights, my HSPM is typically around 5. My FoLPM is typically lower, at around 4. So, to get rough estimates on how much MP5 that crit generates when looking at a new piece of gear, I use 0.18 instead of 0.2.
It's a much more exact formula than the one posted above, but it's also a very personal formula (to an extent, i.e. every paladin should have a high amount of HLPM on Festergut). So, if you're really interested in the mana gains from crit, take some time to look at your logs and you'll find the magic number that represents the conversion from crit to MP5 for future gearing choices.

MP5 per crit is heavily dependent on Haste as well, for starting heroics you wouldn't be able to get that many casts in a minute.
In which case, EM per crit would be more accurate assessment than MP5 per crit.
