During the Sundering, what happened exactly to Kalimdor (the old big continent called Kalimdor, not the current Kalimdor)?
The Sundering destroyed almost everything that was in it's middle, and all that wasn't sunk are some lands from it's margins (the three continents we see in WoW)?
Or the Sundering broke Kalimdor in three parts, than moved them away from each other untill they became the 3 different continents in WoW?

I'm thinking it was some combination of the two. Most of the land was shifted away, but some, near the epicenter, were sunken instead.

According to the
WoWWiki page
, the Sundering was where the Well of Eternity exploded, which plunged 80% of the continent of Kalimdor (which was essentially a super-continent like RL Pangea or whatever its name wast), underwater. The edges, which were so far from the well that they were relatively unaffected, turned into the 3 continents and the various small islands.
If the Sundering simply broke the continent apart, then you wouldn't have the Sunken City of Vashj'ir.
Also, Azshara used to be the capital city of the night elves before the Sundering.
