Sylvanas seems to change a lot as well, now that I listen to her dialogue on Youtube in addition to the transcript.
Of course, it could just be her terrible actress...

Probably, the actress part not the thing about her changing heh.

I would rather that he worked towards Yogg-saron elimination separated from the Horde...
Fighting the Scourge is taxing enough, and he wasn't willing to work with the Horde because the Horde's partnership resulted in the wrathgate.
It was Garrosh that caused the Alliance to not send troops to Ulduar, not Varian. Had Garrosh not gone "GRAAAH! ALLIANCE PIGS!" and tried to attack the leader of the Alliance, Rhonin would've explained what was going on and things might have cooled down.
How do you get rid of a political faction that exists with the intend of survival? If non genocide is possible, then its something roughly next to it.
Dismantle their military and replace their government. Real world nations are rendered powerless and effectively dismantled all the time without killing all citizens of the nation in question.

You'd have to kill them all to keep them under control.
And yeah, that idea works in theory but not in reality; look at Iraq and Afghanistan, there still fighting back against this new reigme lol.

So there is a part of Arthas left? After all, Uther said that it was the last part of him the kept the Lich King from ordering the scourge to destroy the world.

HR_Jaina_HR13 - There's nothing left of Arthas. Only the Lich King remains...

Then if the Alliance wins the coming war, that's a decision for the Horde races to make; submit to the Alliance or be destroyed.
Although heck, they could always just be booted back through the Dark Portal.
And yeah, that idea works in theory but not in reality; look at Iraq and Afghanistan, there still fighting back against this new reigme lol.
And how much of a threat to the west would you say that the governments of Afghanistan and Iraq are now?

And they (at least the orcs), would not submit.
And Varian would have succeeded in destroying a race.

Let me point at something else, said by Uther.
Loosely summarized, he said that somebody has take on the burden of becoming a Lich King, so the Scourge armies don't annihilate all Azeroth. My top 3 takers would be Tirion, Saurfang, and ... Muradin?
Jaina
?
Sylvanas
?
Don't think its Slyvanas, she, after all, ordered a Forsaken attack on Gilneas. Unless there's more then Forsaken.
I'd have to say Darion.

Wasn't there no information about Jaina in Cataclysm?
+1 for Jaina - Lich Queen
if I'm wrong, shoot me.

Maybe there is more information we don't have yet. Varian hates the horde (Battle for Undercity) and then here he allows Saurfang to gather the body of his fallen son. That could take to mean that Varian will not stand in the way of someone's family even if he does hate the orcs. But that contradicts his stance on killing Med'an (or that could just be because Med'an's mother killed Varian's father).
Anyway, as I see it there are still missing facts that will either be in the patch or possiblly in the comic. Without these missing facts, Varian seems to contradict himself a lot.
(Yes, I just kept on rambling there and I didn't stop.)

There was an old theory that Varian's mind may be a little confused. I didn't read the comics though.
Yeah, I think he might have be affected by a split personality disorder, seeing as when you talk to him in game, he talks about things like he's still Lo'gosh.
As for the other Icecrown stuff.... it sounds epic heh.

whoa I'm surprised at the varian coment on saurfang, gotta reckon I didn't saw that comming :P
well, this gives me a renewed hope, a small one, frail tiny, and REAAAALY far hope, that there is more to every character in-game than we realize.
I think you hit the nail with this comment dude.
Remember me saying something about characters not being static, and that one of the things they should do in a story is break your expectations? This is why I stand by the thought that Garrosh will be a better leader than most will expect
all this time I had pictured varian as a rage-aholic, who cares nothing about the orcs, and wanna slaughters every one of them.
now his little comment hasn't fully dispelled the rage-aholic image i have of him, but now I consider him a man to be able to actually listen to reason. and that gives me hope.
if he could see an orc as more than just a monster, if he could see an orc as a hero, as a being capable of honor, then perhaps not all is lost.
if he could listen to reason, then perhaps so will garrosh (given that these 2 are the largest rage-aholics on the game, heck they should just marry and get it over with)
however this is not all about varian, time to coment on the other things.
Uther's soul still trapped inside frostmourne makes no sence, since we can talk to his ghost on his tomb on west plagelands.
how can he do that if he's trapped on a sword?
and now, the last part, a new lich king must take the place of the current one to prevent the scourge from running rampart through azeroth?.
as odd as it sounds, that makes sence.
let's think of Starcraft pls.
on Starcraft, the equivalent of the scourge is called "The Zerg" these creatures are an insectoid race (similar to the quiraj) that swarm the universe, their strenght is that their numbers are infinite, they just swarm weherever they go and overwhelm everyone (hence the name of "Zerging" for strategys that consists only on gathering massive numbers and just rush in)
these creatures were controlled by a massive lord called "the overmind" and lower versions called "Cerebrates".
whenever a cerebrate was killed, his brood of zergs went berserk, and started moving en-masse killing everythign on their path.
when the overmind was killed the zerg went into a massive berserking and it wasn't untill a new overmind took controll that they calmed down. (this new overmind was Sarah Kerrigan, the best villian ever)
if the zerg are left with no overmind, nothing will soothe them, nothing will calm them down, they would just berserk and swarm all over the universe.
same goes here with the scourge, I can see that the only thing keepign the undead minions in place is the will of the lich king, should he be removed, the rest of undead left on azeroth would either remain motionless waiting to get killed, or go into berserkign and "zerg" every inch of azeroth.
