Artifically infused currency at an uncontrolled rate, never going to happen. Its not a coincidence that when you take damage you have to pay for repairs. Not a coincidence epic flight costs 5000g, or a chopper costs 13000g. X amount of g is made at the "wow mint", and is removed from the market at Y rate. Its complex to explain, just easier to say it will never happen.
The gold doesn't come out of thin air, it comes out of the pockets of the people you're selling game time to.

I like the concept, but doubt the end result would be good...
Honestly, with the economy being down, money is tight... If I could play for *Free it would be a big plus.
Perhaps there could be a game time vendor...
But what is a fair price to pay for a month of play?
Good question... I remember the old days where 100 G was a huge amount.
I remember grinding gold for over a month at 3-4 hours a day to get epic flying... Now it's far easier to get gold... lots of quests being completed add to the gold in game.
So there is more money in game now than used to be, because of dailies. How can Blizz deflate the economy? I don't know, I'm not an economist. increase repair bills?... just thinking...
So, how much would YOU pay for a month of *Free WOW?
*Free = spending time in game grinding having "fun" instead of grinding dollars at work

Just...no. It's just like buying gold. You spend 15 real dollars and exchange it in-game for gold. Very bad idea.

Did you even read the original suggestion before you started rambling about artifically infused currency?
I'll let Tarzan explain since my original suggestion apparently had to many big words:
Me no gold. Me buy game time token for $15. You lotsa gold. You buy my token for 2000g. Me happy for gold. You happy for 1 month free. No extra gold in game.

So this is what i would do
I would get a trial for my first month, buy the second. Get to mid-max level spending maybe $45 total. Make enough $$ to buy a gamecard. buy a gamecard, use it. Make enough $$ to buy a gamecard. buy a gamecard, use it. rinse and repeat. and all this while i only spent $85 total (40 for the game, 45 for monthly fee). And yes, I know other people would be paying for it, but seriously? everyone would have 20 accounts and little kids would be doing the latest raid with a friend or two, spamming buttons on their 20 computers (or multiboxing). I mean, c'mon, we've all seen pallies and DKs faceroll PvP and multiple instances. It takes a while, but it can be done. I mean, who would trust a PuG when you can do it with two or three friends? One on the DPS (all one class, all spamming same buttons), one tanking, on healing. Who would care about 40-mans for great gear when slightly worse gear can be bought dirt-cheap? We would have essentially, an AFKer PvP system.

One way to abuse it would be for a thief to keylog your account, spend all your gold buying up game time tokens on AH, then spamming "Buy 1 month game time, only $5".
How is this different from a thief hacking my account and then spamming trade with "Buy 2000g, only $5"?
One of the strength of your suggestion is that there is little reason for goldsellers to get involved in-game card trade - they are not allowed to sell cards in game for real cash, only for gold. The only thing somebody with lots of gold could do is buy up a bunch of cards and then sell them outside the game for less than $15. However, this scenario is not drastically different from me, say, posting an out of game ad stating that I have X amount of gold for sale.
The main problem is that Blizzard, while losing nothing in terms of subscription income, would be still be stuck with expenses related to implementation and support. And, of course, there are the usual "you have to click your mouse just as hard as I do to get gold" objections.

This won't work for WoW.
Games like EVE-Online work because their currency can buy every item in the game.
In WoW, most "valuable" items are non-tradeable. Gold does not have much use anymore. Only for buying aesthetic items, or enchants, mats, etc. Things which can easily be earned through some dailies.

Blizzard can solve all the hacking problems by just sending everyone a WoW authenticator (atleast in Europe/US) instead of people having to pay for one.
You can already get an authenticator for your mobile phone for less than $1 and for $5-6 you get a keyring, no need to make it any cheaper than that.
I think Blizz should do something like declaring that by april 2010 it's no longer possible to log onto wow without having an authenticator attached to the account, that would give us half a year to get one.
If that's too harsh at least they could make an authenticator a requirement before helping people restore compromised accounts. "Greetings dear customer. As a response to your report of account theft, I have locked your account to prevent further damage, tracked down the gold and items stolen and reimbursed them. You will be able to log into your account management page with the password provided. Once you have assigned an authenticator to the account you will be able to log onto the game again". Really, people that gets their accounts compromised are apparently not up to speed on how to keep their account data safe, so it's a fools errand to help them restore what is lost without at the same time requiring them to switch to a more secure setup.
With account thefts a thing of the past, that leaves Blizzard with the question of whether to support the demand for buying gold or not. The amount of gold sellers around currently proves that there is a market, enough people are willing to buy gold otherwise the gold sellers wouldn't be there.
Blizzard is not going to sell gold themselves, adding gold to the game that way has negative effects. But they might go for a gold and cash neutral idea like the one in this thread.

I don't understand economics theory well enough to know if it would work, but I would be happy if they started a system like this. People for whom the subscription fee is trivial can buy cards and make loads of gold if they want to... I would still see this as cheating the game anyway whether they do it in a sanctioned way or go to illegal websites. But for someone like me on low income, being able to pay for my subscription with gold would be an ideal situation. Ok it would take time to get the gold together but time is something I have plenty of at the moment!

No kidding. :( Makes me sad because there isn't an Authenticator app for my Intensity or my roommate's Envy Touch...

Then splash out the $6 for the keyring version, it shouldn't break any budgets either.
