I've never connected with someone by considering the fact I'm going to share the same fate as someone.

maybe not consciously... but i think everyone does on a subconscious level.

It's depending on situation, Ignis. I don't think many, if any, do subconsciously.

so you saying if you met someone that was 1000 years old and couldn't die from old age and could technically live FOREVER you would not look at him/her differently? riiight
Post by
Lusky
Of course I would act differently towards them, considering they are a possibility to invest an extremely long-term relationship with, but again that's a specific scenario/situation, Ignis. In general, all people are equal to me, but this is me, not everyone else, but I still don't think people would completely different towards just mortals, I mean of course an immortal would embrace another immortal more, it's one of the only people he could keep in contact with without having to lose them, unless in an accident.

Would I take it?
Absolutely.
After having lost so many of my family due to natural causes over the past year, and not having felt much at all, I think I'm prolly cold enough to even get past that particular negative aspect of it. It's the sense of adventure that comes with seeing where we go as a species. The technology, the wars, the good, the bad...
Incidentally, have you ever heard of and/or watched the newer Justice League cartoons? No, they no longer air, but when they did, I watched them religiously and enjoyed every single episode.
Anyway, there were a couple different episodes that covered immortality as portrayed in the DC character, Vandal Savage. He had the gift of immortality, and actually ended up living to regret it. You see, throughout his existence in the Justice League universe, he was also empowered with superhuman intellect, and was driven to control
everything
.
At one point, Superman ended up getting "killed" (in actuality, transported thousands (I think?) of years into the future), at which point, with nobody to challenge him, Savage brought about the destruction of civilization.
...No idea where I was going with that, but still...

I think I'd go for it. Even though I am a person who attaches to friends very quickly and easily, I am also a person who is somewhat quick to remember the people for the good moments shared, and not the bad ones experienced at separation.
Will it be a tough call? Gods, yea! But I believe a normal life span is just not enough to experience everything I want to - nor is it enough to accomplish everything I have in mind. Just think of how many things I - or anyone - could change for the better in a few lifetimes. Bragging rights aside, you will be able to just walk into the government and say "
What you are doing now - this crap - yea, it happened about 700 years ago, and ended up
badly
!" That, assuming you decide to take a public role.
Being a hermit is certainly another viable option. Bury yourself in a library and learn
everything
that there is. This certainly looks very appealing to me.
And, of course, there is the chance to meet even more wonderful people than you've known in your normal lifetime. That means experiencing sorrow over their losses a lot more often, but I believe you'd learn how to deal with it quickly and pay less attention to such emotional ties.
Yes, almost definitely, I'd take it.

I would take immortality in an instant. Life changes enough that I don't think it would get boring for a very, very, long time. I would probably fade in and out of a public spot. Show up, be the all knowing jerk for a few years, and then fade away one night for the next hundred years or so.
I would even take the deathless variety. Especially if the injuries I would take wouldn't maim me for life. There are so many things I would love to do that would probably kill me if I screwed up. I would even take the pain if my body regenerated fully.

The thing is for me I'd be terrified by the concept of seeing time move on, everything around you decay and crumble as humanity marched forward. Point, because of immortality to quote ArgentSun
""you will be able to just walk into the government and say "What you are doing now - this crap - yea, it happened about 700 years ago, and ended up badly!""
would mean perhaps you could help the world become a better place.
Or go insane, live in the woods and marry a raccoon.
Death and life are hand in hand, so throwing immortality into it would have some SERIOUS repercussions I could imagine. Mental results alone... and as many have pointed out, if people realized you were immortal? Governments would be there, the crazy fanatics would arrive to have you 'make them like YOU!' and ...
Would I take it?
As much as growing older and dying scares me, a natural time frame fits me more. Plus it is less of a burden on the environment. I mean seriously... how could the Earth support humanity if it was full of immortals? It's having a hard enough time as is!

Tyristrasz and ArgentSun seemed to have answered something that most people have forgotten to talk about, not that I was putting any emphasis on it.
I could see how loss of family and friends could be trivialised in the face of knowledge and experience and the possible prospect of making new friends, but how would you deal with the loss of your lover?
Post by
ArgentSun
It's all temporary, blade... Knowing the man I am, I will probably remember her for a whole eternity, but remember her not as someone valuable I've lost, but as someone valuable I've known. For some time, maybe some years, I would mourn the loss, but I am pretty sure that after a few centuries I'll be ready to try again. Just making sure I don't grow too attached...
Or who knows, maybe I wouldn't find another lover at all. When you are a few thousands years old, you tend to think everybody around you is a child, and any show of affection becomes a twisted act of pedophilia.

We'll I would like living logner but totally immortal? NO
I'd like something like the Philospopher's stone(sp?) from HP but if no one could know about it because then it would get pretty bad...
Maybe something else is that I can die of natural causes but nothing else. Dunno?
I'd probbably take it if I could kill myself when I get tired of it.

this may sound like mumbo jumbo to some of you but i belive that theres a balance between all things in life(or death).
water and fire, light & darkness, birth and death for one thing there must be a equal opossing force.
as a example we take the grim reaper, technicaly (if he is real or not) is alive because he can affect the "living plane", and because of his immortality he has been charged to keep the balance between living and dead, he needs to take life to stay immortal(im talking about that kind of immortality that makes it possible to walk on the sun).
IF you become immortal there has to be some catch like your hunted by death itself for all of eternity because you escaped his grasp.
according to me theres 3 kinds of immortalitys
1)invurnable: cannot be hurt by anything and dies of old age
2)ageless: cannot die of old age but kan be killed by outside forces
3) eternal: cannot be killed or die by old age
the first two is those that wont affect the balance in the world much and so dont need a counterpart but the last one needs one to be able to exist for what would we call life without death?
i would actuly accept the first 2 because i KNOW it will end if i want it to...... but the last one *shudder* i would rather be stuck in hell getting butt f****d by the devil for the rest of eternity then see the world erode before my very eyes and cant do anything about it.
well this is my 5 cent(or how you frace it)

water and fire
I don't consider water and fire to be opposing forces...
Post by
coolbond
fire evaporates water water puts out fire they dont mix that makes them opposing forces
