Well, you can't not discipline a kid, otherwise the kid will turn into a &*!@#$ bag who thinks it can get whatever it wants. I mean, I don't like the idea of hitting a kid, but if it gets to the point where either the kid thinks it can do whatever he or she wants and having to discipline the kid, I think spanking his or her butt is fine. Then again, that might be a parental fail if it let it come down to that.
See, what's up with calling kids "it"s?
And seriously, that's a pretty black and white view. Just because a kid is not physically disciplined, doesn't mean that the kid has to be spoiled. Plus, a lot more kids who are beaten by their parents are more spoiled, because after they beat them, the parents usually feel guilt, and there comes the frame of time when the kid can ask for pretty much anything that's fairly reasonable.
*Beep* Derailing Warning *Beep*
I edited my post before you replied and cleaned it up, its just easy to say "it" when you're talking about something and don't have a specific gender. Anyways, my point is simply that if a parent lets it get to the point where either its spank the child or let it do whatever it wants, it would be better in the long run for the child to spank it. Now, there are ways to avoid having to go down that road by punishing it other ways before it comes down to that, but when you're already down the road and you have to make the decision, I'm just saying that the option is there.

Ok let's just say you're in this scenario: You have a little kid named Jimmy throwing a fit because you got him Cherros instead of Honey Nut Cherros, and you tell him to go to his room and he won't.
Do you:
A) Drop to your knees and tell him you're sorry, and you'll buy him Honey Nut Cherros, and a new toy truck because you screwed up
or
B) Try to reason with him, which will only cause him to run up and punch you in the face because he's angry you didn't get him Cherros
or
C) Threaten to discipline him, and then spank him if he doesn't stop throwing his fit
?

If you've actually managed to raise a kid who will do this....uh...well....
Also, since when could you read the minds of children?

No, but I've seen kids like this before, who physically threaten their parents because they're too scared to discipline their kid.

The people who say that spanking is NEVER right, and the only way is to sit down comfortably and talk, and never to punish... well... they are seeing life through rose colored glasses. Sometimes, measured and appropriate physical punishment is necessary.
The people who say that slapping a child is ok as long as they don't need hospitol, or experience blood loss... well.. that is the other extreme. There needs to be a lot of self control and self discipline before you discipline a child.
Neither of these extremes will work. In fact, with children, avoid extremes on anything. Furthermore, nothing is set in stone. Be flexible. Show the child you are willing to change and keep an open mind. Also show that you have a measure of consistency and will stick to your values if you feel it neccessary.
This thread really should be about "How to display common sense when raising kids". Slapping/beating isn't common sense. Tea/crumpets in place of punishment isn't common sense. The first yields a violent selfish brat of an adult. The second yields an insecure indecisive dysfunctional brat of an adult.

But that's in cases where the child has been misraised anyway.

This isn't what s/he meant and you know it.
Of course it is not what he meant to say, but he said that he was never hit, and then that he hit his mother, I just thought the two were connected.

He hit back because his mother hit him. Probably because he'd been hit by his mother, the figure humans automatically trust above all others, and he felt that trust had been abused.
