Should Cocaine Be Legal?

Every year, an underworld thrives on illicit drug trafficing. If the government were to sanction the production of cocaine and heroine for commercial consumption, the base of these industries would be swept off thier feet. They would go out of business. Applying the proper tax on the industry, and the lower amount of money paid on DEA type activities, the US could stand to make a large profit instead of deficit.
But, would the ends justify the means? Would cocain and heroin available to our children really be the solution to a financial crisis?
PS. You get ten points if you can accurately guess my personal stance before I announce it.

You're joking, right? Right... ?
Oh, Laihendi gets it. You're criticizing legalization of marijuana, and at some point in this thread you're going to try to tie that idea in with Obama, or liberals in general.

No, why should we allow people to harm themselves and others?

And if it were legalized it would probably be like tobacco and alcohol (children wouldn't be able to legally buy it).

Laihendi. You prove yourself always eager to jump to conclusions about my position. You always end up wrong when you do that. Perhaps someday you will learn.
I agree with the legalization of Cocaine, Heroin, and Marijuana. I think we have sufficent crimes to convict those who do horrible things while under the influence of these drugs, just like we do for alcohol.
Furthermore, if someone wants to be a cokehead, we should do all we can to tax thier brains out, putting that money in our hands, as well as supply them with the purest drug possible, to speed thier self imposed departure.

Wow, that's even worse than Laihendi thought your position would be. Unless you're being sarcastic?

Tobacco. Alcohol. People are already allowed to harm themselves and others.
Well, I truly think those shouldn't be allowed either. Also, MyTie, I disagree, why should we allow people to harm (or kill) themselves?

@ASH - What gives government the right to tell us what is good for us. We should know what is best for us. The people.. not Congress.

If you think dieing is good for you, then you don't know what's good for you. Also, I think the government has the right to intervene to stop death, weather suicide or otherwise.

I would never smoke. However, for some people its a personal choice, and no matter how misguided or stupid it is they (in this case, unfortunately) have free will and the power to choose. Plus, if they want to damage their bodies, at least the country gets money.
I never understood why a "big government" is such a bad thing. The bigger the government, the richer the country, the better protection we have from outside and domestic threats. (I know that part's irrelevant, but it suddenly occurred to me as I was typing.
No, how can we stand ideally by as people do harm to themselves? We could help, we could stop them doing this, I think there are always alternatives. Plus, they most likely harm others too.

ASHelmy, you keep bringing up the same point. How is that point any different from people taking drugs from doctors with adverse side affects or alcohol?
Edit: If the government sells it cheaper than the street price (it's really not that hard to do with their ridiculous prices) then it wouldn't be hard to push it off the streets. If the governments cocaine is more pure, you will get a better high from it and people won't be leaning towards street dealers anymore. It will be less of a hassle to get it from the gov't, better quality and cheaper.
Taking drugs from doctors can save your life, I said I don't think alcohol should be legal. Would a world without alcohol truly be worse?
That maybe true, but it would also attract more people, offsetting any sort of gain from "quality".
