One of the most useful threads I've read in ages. Been getting facerolled on my mage by pretty much everybody, but this has given me some ideas on how to improve.
Much much love guys.
one thing i've noticed playing several other classes is that mages take a lot more..... subtlety to PvP well with than other classes. retadins and DKs with a moderate amount of skill can faceroll their way to the destruction of most any class... mages aren't so lucky, and that's part of the beauty and fun in playing a mage, and PvPing with one really well..
as i've said, i'm no expert at pvping by any means, but I think i've learned enough about the class mechanics that I can give a pretty good overview for how to do some things. however, pallys, DKs and rogues still kick my ass almost every time.

Arcane Subtlety - 2 points - Reduces the chance your helpful spells and DoT effects will be dispelled by 15/30% and reduces the threat caused by your arcane spells by 20/40%.
My thoughts: Skip this talent. Threat is worthless in pvp, and the only DoT that's worth anything would be from Living Bomb.
Just my 2 cents.
Arcane Subtlety does protect your Armors, POMs, APs, Combustion, Ice Barrier, etc. from being dispelled, so I wouldn't classify it as totally worthless.

updated... added mages and pally strategies (thank you very much to Open and StrangersWifCandy who wrote those) as well as my own personal takes on Priests and Shaman's. STILL looking for help with Rogues and Warlocks.. Help make this thread worth something guys!

Frost channelling - 3 points - Reduces the mana cost of all spells by 4/8/12% and reduces the threat caused by your frost spells by 4/8/12%.
My thoghts: Again with the mana reduction/threat reduction. I think this is more worthwhile than precision simply because for the same amount of points, it's a 12% mana decrease as opposed to a 3% decrease. AGain, use at your discretion
I believe it's 3/7/10 % decrease now. :)

BTW - For deathknights you want Mage Armor. It will reduce Disease and Chains of Ice time by 50%.
Means you will start walking 5 seconds after you have been chained instead of 10. And strangulate will last half too.

danroe, that's a really good point. i'll be sure to put that in there.
@vipeout, THANK YOU for your rogue writeup. ANYTHING is better than what I have to offer against rogues because, as i've said, they've been the bane of my existance since i was a wee lil' mage in TBC. and you're probably right... anyone who's in the 2k+ arena rating will probably not need any advice I could give them.

Go ahead and append this to the mage section: How to fight a Frost Mage as PvP Arcane.
Spellsteal Ice Barrier. Use your own Frost Ward, and spellsteal his if it fades or is spellstolen.
Spam Slow+Arcane Barrage.
Use Images after he pops his, or after he summons his WE.
Never use PoM or Arcane Power while he's spamming Spellsteal on you.
While he doesn't have Ice Barrier, his only way to stop Arcane Barrage+Fire Blast spam is Counterspell silence, and Ice Block. GG, he's going to be dead soon.

Just a suggestion: As it's a pvp guide u could aswell post here some good and helpfull pvp addons which counts his cooldowns for example or show DR's.(In rogue/mage setup this may help)
you have any particular specific ideas in mind? i don't personally use addons for PvPing and when I looked at the PvP category under curse i saw roughly 250 addons.... lol.. Although, something that tells me when a rogue's cloak of shadows and pvp trinket are on cooldown would be hella helpful.
and of course, any other addons that you guys find useful would be great as well.

Should look better now, however it still will need a change in Achloryn's post.
i'll take care of that after my finals today.
also @Open... does counterspell REALLY work against a rogue who's vanishing? wtf... lol

It works the same way melee players often auto-attack rogues out of vanish. They vanish, but they were swinging their weapon at the same time, and even though they vanished before the auto-attack, the server still registers a hit and breaks vanish.
It's all latency.
