Honestly, The Giver seemed more like a dystopia to me.
I mean, on the surface it looks perfect and there don't seem to be any problems, but its actually pretty f---ed up.
irony, it's meant to be dystopic

@OP:
Nah, we never could...
There's always going to be some sort of imperfection.
Why?
Humans think differently. There is no range to the ideals that the human mind can grasp. Therefore, what one thinks is a utopia is a total nightmare to another.
This is even true ultimately if only one group of people with similar interests are the only people left alive.
The only perfect world would be one without thought and reason if this is the argument made.

Then kill all the people who don't think like you.

Problem with that is there's no one who is going to think 100% like you. To achieve the goal, everyone except you has to die.
There is always disagreement, even on the smallest things.

No, because wherever good things appear, people come forth to destroy them.

The word utopia stems from the Greek ουτοπία, or literal "no place".
Can it exist? I think not. Not because humans are evil, but because we as a race are not perfect. Which may be synonymous definitions to some...
It's the same reason Communism won't work, because, isn't Communism utopia?

The only thing by Ayn Rand Laihendi has read is Anthem.

MyTie
Then again, Ayn Rand isn't light reading. MyTie could easily handle her, if he hasn't done so a myriad of times already. Queggy could as well. Interest and Lahendi... Odds are still good. The rest of you I don't know well enough to judge, or know better than to suggest it. (None of them have Rihanna in them, for example. That and I wouldn't give these books to a 12 year old unless they were already in line for Harvard.)
I read Atlas Shrugged before I was 12. However, I wouldn't go to Harvard if Obama himself offered to pay for the courses and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would carry me piggyback style from class to class.
On a serious note... good reading.
